Black Plastic Wire Loom on Plug Wires?

I'm working on a Trans Am for a friend and it's a TPI 350. Getting ready to replace all of the plug wires and plugs. All of the existing spark plug wires have black plastic wire loom on there and it's all melted everywhere and some of it is melted together. At first, I thought the actual wires were melted together in a couple places, but it appears to be mostly wire loom as far as I can tell. Should that even be on there? I've never used plastic wire loom on plug wires in my 89 TBI or any other car for that matter and they seem to do fine without it. Is there a reason a TPI should have that? I've never owned a TPI, so just wanted to be sure before I go put new wire loom back on there. Seems like a fire hazard to me. Thanks for the help!

I would never use that on plug wires, seems like melted plastic is what you would get.

I have been using the little shields that cover the ends by the headers with good luck for a couple years now...

From the factory they used wire loom on the plug wires. It's not usually a problem since it's nowhere close to the exhaust and it's high temp rated split loom.

Thanks for the info. Had no idea. Clearly, what's on here is not high temp, but probably some cheap parts store replacement that's made for speaker wire.

Could be... Look for a white/gray/blue stripe which is generally on high temp loom. Normally the loom would be between the distributor and the valve covers, where it's fine.

I just checked, no white/gray/blue stripe, just solid black and the loom goes from the distributor boots all the way to the plug boots on every wire.

Also, not really related, but someone has put masking tape around the circumference of the distributor and numbered the wires 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 in order clockwise. I thought that was cute.

When I first discovered this, I actually got on here one night and searched to see if there was some crazy firing order for TPIs. I should have known better.haha
