Starting Issues.....No Crank, No Dash Lights
Starting Issues.....No Crank, No Dash Lights
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I have a 1986 z28 that wont crank and has no dash power. I was starting the car and heard a bang. At that point it would not crank and the dash lights and sounds also stopped working. I checked the fuse panel and nothing was blown. From what I have read, that means its probably not the ignition switch in the steering column. Does anyone know the location of fusible links or another possible solution for this problem?

One fusible link is near the battery, connected to the main positive lead. There are at least two links near the starter, connected to the main positive power stud.
While checking fusible links, also inspect the ground connections. There is a main negative lead from the battery to the engine, a short lead from the battery to the body, and another from the rear of the engine (usually the intake) to the firewall.

This right here is key to figuring it out , something that fails to the point of "bang" (as opposed to "pop" or "snap" , , or maybe even the dreaded "fizzle/fizzle of the wiring shiznizzle") should be pretty darned obvious once you get under there and start lookin at the wiring . Thanks Guys,
I traced the lines from the starter and couldn't find any. the one near the battery is on a orange line and the fuse is intact. I guess I should have mentioned that the radiator fan was jumped when I bought the car. I tried to change it out to work properly and failed. at that point I went to jump it again to run with the ignition and I think I might have hooked things up wrong. having said that, I think it is possible that I blew the ignition switch or starter. my original fan relay has thick red, regular red, brown/white and green/white. I went thick red to fan motor, regular red to alternator, green/white to fan switch, green/white to ecm with a ground wire to body. brown/white is connected to the light brown/white also going into the ecm. Does this sound right?

Re: Starting Issues.....No Crank, No Dash Lights
yeah ive been lost in those diagrams more times than i care to admit.
this may not be that helpful but one thing i do recall is when i lost power to my cluster was that when i pulled both flasher units out of the convenience centre and applied power to one side of them, i regained all power to the cluster and was able to crank.
try applying power to one of the sides of the crank fuse - at least that will help narrow it down to something in the dash as opposed to the engine bay. Pull the crank fuse, have the immobiliser deactivated and the key in the on position. If she turns over then the starter motor wiring etc is all in tact and its likely something in the dash. Get a wire with a constant 12v and a blade connector then touch it to one side of the fuseless terminal (cant remember which side)
