Looking for advice on pitted deck surface
just wondering how bad is this pitting? I know it needs decking, but is it too far gone? As it's already been bored .040 over in the past.
I guess if I put the heads on like this, it'd blow a gasket rather quick?
Thank you

Looks like a 84-back LG4 305?
Time to throw that one in the trash and start over with a 4" bore. 87-up preferably.

Re: Looking for advice on pitted deck surface
judging by the pics,I think it looks ok-I saw some rust around some of the water jacket holes-that won.t matter as minor as that pitting is-but areas right around the bores looked good.I don.t think decking will be needed if engine is just for mild street use.

Re: Looking for advice on pitted deck surface
Doesn't look that bad to me. For just stock street use it should be fine. The important area is where the fire ring seats and that looks ok. Minor pitting around the coolant ports is pretty typical. You could use a light (VERY LIGHT SMEAR) of high temp RTV in the pitted areas just before installation of the gasket..... If it makes you feel better. Use a composite gasket not MLS. They handle sh*t surfaces better.

There is what looks to be at least a 1/2" between the cylinders. Check the block code - I think you will find it's a 267.

Re: Looking for advice on pitted deck surface
Thank you for the advice. I think I'll go for the 0.028 Chevrolet Performance gasket as its composite and not too thick. I noticed looking on Summit, there are hardly any composite gaskets and the 0.051 is probably too thick.
I looked up the engine number a while back, it's definetly a 305 from 1978.
I'll be putting aluminium heads on too, the Corvette ones.
