'88 Firebird A/C Compressor Issues
Hello! I'm brand spankin' new to this forum, regardless, I have quite an issue.
I have an '88 Firebird 305 having issues in the A/C compressor system. Essentially if I try running the 'bird with the A/C on (at all; cold or hot), the pulley will lock up and "force" itself to spin again. As I was watching this compressor pulley lock up and force itself, smoke started rising out from it! It was burning my serpentine belt! Not only that but it causes my car to overheat. Now if you freely spin the pulley, it sounds like grinding rocks (broken bearings?).
I've made arrangements to take my 'bird to the shop but it's a little to pricey for my comfort. They said they'd test the system and lines, replace the compressor if they have to, recharge freon, replace orfice tube etc. etc.
Is this a job I'd be able to do myself or should I give in and trust my 'bird in someone else's hands?
