Running rough, misfiring and then wouldn't restart.

My car started running rough and misfiring, it was fine at highway speeds, but taking off or climbing up hill it gave me problems. It died on me on my way home, and would crank but not start. Had no engine lights come on, but on the scan tool the BLM was in the 140's.

Used a spark tester light, had no spark at the plugs. Replaced the coil with another one I had, still nothing.

Pulled the cap, and the center rotor contact was worn way down. Put on a new cap and rotor car starts right up, but the idle is at around 1100, and the tach needle is bouncing all over the place.

Replaced the ignition coil with the old one, and now the car idles fine, but it is misfiring again when I move.

Are both coils bad or is something else wrong?

Did you disconnect the battery, and drive enough to allow the ECM to do a full re-learn after changing the "coil" (assume you mean ignition control module)?

I didn't change the ICM I changed the ignition coil, that attaches to the center post of the distributor cap.

Did you give it enough drive time to re-learn?

Re: Running rough, misfiring and then wouldn't restart.

I put the replacement coil back in, disconnected the battery and drove for a bit. The idle did settle eventually, but the tachometer is still bouncing all over.

It was running great, while in open loop, but once it enters closed loop it starts hesitating at low speeds and accelerating slow from a stop, and the BLM on the scan tool is between 136-140.

It is not as bad as it was before I changed the coils.

So do you think the new coil is bad or, is something else wrong?
