Some progress at last....
Finally got around to reinstating the vapor canister and its components. The original carb is away being rebuilt. No-one carries parts on the shelf for a CC QJet here so I got them in from the Carburetor Doctor in Canada.
I put a filter going to from the carb port on the canister to the CCV to catch any charcoal I thought might escape but have been told this is unnecessary as it can't happen.

One of the signs of a bad canister is finding charcoal in the carb bowl. It can and has happened. I think it's a wise precaution.

I'll keep the filter in place. No sign of anything but it a good precaution as you say. When the rebuilt original carb goes in, we'll see for sure if anything is there that shouldn't be. Was pretty sure that I'd read about it happening before, so thanks for confirming it
