Hey all,

Was wondering what other folks experience was with the washer pumps for the Firebirds/Camaros. I have an 1984 Trans Am and am now on my 3rd washer pump in as many years. I have always used the correct AC Delco pump for the 84 but it seems, after a year or so, they just up and die. They sound like they're running - but no spray. Just put in a new one and it's working like a charm - but for how long? Hoses obviously aren't clogged and I don't see anything wrong with the old pump.

The new one I just put in says it is self-priming - I'm not sure if the other ones were but I would suspect so.

Is this just a flimsy part that tends to wear out quickly?

had the same issue, grabbed some cheap crap off of ebay out of china for like $6

been working so far for over a year

 

This is the pump that fits into the wiper motor assembly? If so what I would do is to replace them with a in-line pump next to the washer bottle. Then wire a push button switch in the dash to operate it.

Being next to and as low as the washer bottle keeps it filled with fluid.

From what I could tell the wiper motor mounted pumps would lose prime. This caused the pump impeller to seize to the pump cavity. Hence a short life.

Yeah, the wiper motor mounted pumps cavitate due to the water flowing back into the reservoir.The remote style are much better.

I "fixed" mine by running an extension (harness) form the wiper motor to the remote mounted pump.Im using a 4th gen piece as well.I also extended the hose to reach the pump, but it works great w/out adding an extra switch.
