I know engines torque to the passenger side when under load but when you are engine braking which way does it torque? What I mean by engine braking is when you leave the car in gear (manual) and can feel it slowing you down

As you may suspect, yes, it "torques" the opposite way. ie. if you could watch it, you would see the top of the engine move to the left (driver) side as you lift off the throttle at a fairly high rpm or release the clutch after a downshift.

Re: which way does the engine torque?
I had a Dodge Ram that had a hell of a pop when you let off the throttle at high RPM that drove me crazy trying to diagnose. The dodge frames are open at the top where the motor mount bolt slides in. When you tighten the bolt it pinches the frame together and is supposed to stay in place. The driverside bolt would actually pull out of the frame and when you let off it, compression braking would force it to drop back into place. I finally found what was going on by power braking the engine with the trans in gear until the engine actually lifted out of the frame on the driverside!!! I ended up welding a couple of washers to the frame to capture the bolt. Moral of the story do not underestimate force the torque of a healthy engine exerts on the engine mounting.
