Uneven idle with lights on/Floods on Warm Start
Hey guys,
I'm going to be relocating my '87 GTA a fair distance away (car has been in long-term storage for years), and that means changing out all the fluids and making sure it's mechanically sound to be driven a long way.
This car has had an issue since I bought it 9 years ago with an uneven idle (once engine is warm) that gets worse when the lights are on. The RPM's drift 2-300 rpm, and when trying to start the car with a warm engine it floods, requiring the gas pedal to be depressed slightly in order to fire it up.
The car had a full tune-up 500 km ago, including plugs, wires, cap & rotor.
My mechanic suggested that the alternator was shot, so I had that replaced 200 km ago. The new alternator didn't help. We also replaced the temp sensor, as the dash doesn't display the engine temperature until the engine is warm (digital dash). This didn't help either.
The previous owner had the fuel pump replaced and the tune-up done, as the vehicle had sat untouched for 12 years inside of a barn before he found it.
Does my problem sound like injectors, or something else? My mechanic wanted to replace the injectors too, but I figured it was an electrical issue instead?

You might try using a fuel pressure gauge with the engine warm to see if you have injector leak down.

The more gas you give it while cranking, the less fuel comes out the injectors. I forget the table name in the ECM, but its percentage of throttle vs BPW. It gradually increases as more pedal you give. For example, 25% throttle cuts out a small percentage of fuel, and 100% throttle cuts out almost all fuel (it may even disable the injectors). I dont know what the numbers are but something like that.
That's when when you floor it, you are in clear flood mode. So your injectors might be sticking open, causing the flooding at start, and the messed up idle as well. A $50 ALDL cable with laptop and tunerpro would tell you if the car is running rich.
