engine tapping

OKay. im trying to figure out this tapping noise from the engine. I can think of all the possibilities, but I really don't know. I am not ready for an overhaul yet since i just had my tranny rebuilt. so there is a tapping coming from my engine now. it really noticeably started when i was out of town and when i push on the gas to accelerate too hard there was a loud thump. i know this from working on my camaro for years, that the transmission mount busted. but i was out of town so I just accelerated smoothly until i got home. just replaced it tonight and it was broken.. well since that thump, is when you can hear the ticking noise louder.. in the past, something similiar happened but got louder when you accelerated, well back then it was just a couple exhaust manifold bolts were loose because the noise went totally away after. my engine is worn, so some ticking and idling issues i expect, but i have nothing major going on. the oil pressure is smooth and goes up with acceleration. it doesn't idle that bad. i do have some exhaust leak down stream but i wiill work on that later, just loose joints not, a big hole in the exhaust. but otherwise it doesn't seem to misfire or anything wierd..

but when you put it in gear to drop the rpms, you can hear it louder. more pronounce now though even in park. but when you accelerate . you hear everything speed up and disappear. almost like the tapping turns into a fluttering that disappears until you drop the rpms again. so i dont know. i can upload a video of it to youtube if anything wants to hear. i did tighten up one exhaust bolt that was a littleturnable but wasnt like half out or anything. i didnt really check the passenger side tronight because i ran out of light

the thing is, i jacked my car up and crawled under with it running and its louder on the bottom side of the car. i used my mechanic stethoscope but can never really hear it on anything ive touched it too. not even really from the oil pan. so i dont know. sure gets everything turning their heads driving down the street though

Re: engine tapping

Check for a cracked flexplate (assuming auto trans) or loose flexplate bolts.

Re: engine tapping

I may have found a crack on the flexplate, going up the center.. but it doesnt wiggle or anything so, im goign to have the place that rebuilt my tranny look at it. i guess its better than major engine issues at the moment. but will update once it gets look at! thanks for the suggestion!

If the trans job is still under warranty, or close, ask for free labor to R&R the flexplate. Or, maybe a "Deal" for "Future Goodwill and Business".

Yep. Just a hairline crack can make one heck of a noise.
