Well, it's kinda hard, but yes.
What you need to do is follow these steps.
1. Remove hood.
2. Raise the frontend of the car about 14 inches off the ground.
3. Remove the distributor holddown bolt (after removing the cap or wires) and place a rope around the distributor base.
4. Tie the other end of the rope to the rafters in the garage, amke sure it's snug.
5. Now lower the frontend of the car slowly and the distributor will be left dangling on the rope.
Now keep in mind you need to do all the normal Chilton/haynes precautions of..
Disconnecting the negative battery cable.
Block the rear wheels.
Have a fire extiguisher close by.
Make sure this is only done on the 3rd Saturday of an odd numbered month.
Wear safety glasses (or goggles).

Just a thought, did we misunderstand you? I had one that just would not come out of the block. I could turn it back and forth, but it was very tight. If that is the case, turn it back and forth til it comes loose.
