Ignition wont turn to off . 88 FireBird Pontiac

i can only turn it to start the car and then it goes back . But I cant completely turn it to turn off the car. This happen few times but I was able to turn it after it being stuck but now its completely unable to turn it off. I can take the key out but the switch doesnt turn to left so I just stall and unplug the battery .1988 Firebird Pontiac . Can anyone give me any help ? Thanks in advance

There is a malfunction with the cable from the automatic shifter to the ignition switch that locks out the switch from being turned back to OFF without the transmission in park. There's some plastic bits on the switch/cable that will f*ck off and then the cable interface doesn't work properly. You have to pull the lower dash panel and drop the steering column down to get at the switch. I just deleted the cable entirely on my 86 since I have a Hurst Quarter-Stick and that mess never really worked all that well anyway.

I have a Manual V6 2.6L so i dont think im having same problem
