305 cam original vs aftermarket

So I have been trying to do some research on cams to install in my car. Sum-8800 Enginetech ES336 and so on. What is the difference in lobe size is there from the original cam. I just wanted to get a nice sound out of the car and a bit more pep not a drag car that about stalls out every rotation. I am going to install some long tube headers and 3" all the way back, not sure what manufacture yet, and looking at making a cold air intake out of a TPI air box and grabbing some air from the radiator scoop. Trying to modify the car a touch with out hacking the hell out of it. This car has been sitting for 17 years and I have to check it all out so I wanted to make small improvements without taking away from basics of the car.

Re: 305 cam original vs aftermarket

Looks like this is the LG4.

That cam is something around 190°/196° @ .050", .37x"/.38x" or thereabouts. I forget the exact #s but it's in that neighborhood. Known as the "peanut cam" around here. Even smaller than the 929.

If the lobes grew up and thought they needed a bra, Clearasil would take care of it.

A good all-around cam for that motor is the Comp XE256. The 262 is too big.

LG4 peanut on the top, 420/443 112 lsa on bottom. not a big cam by any stretch, but by comparison you can see the difference with the naked eye. I choose it so I could run a mild/stock spring with the rotators and reduce cost of the swap.

If you’re going through the process you may as well go as big as is reasonable - much of that is related to the cylinder head - and if your lg4 has the 416 heads Sofa’s recommended cam is the best performer.

There are lots of “extras” and mightaswells in the process: intake, water pump, rockers, pushrods, spendy break in oil, paint, gaskets oh my.

Re: 305 cam original vs aftermarket

Best all around performing cam I found in a non roller 305 is a Crane 274H06. 218/218 @ 0.050, .450 lift on a cylinder pressure trapping 106 LSA. I ran it advanced to a 98 ICL for even more low-midrange torque. Idle ispretty lumpy but it smooths out just off-idle and makes alot of low-speed torque.

Re: 305 cam original vs aftermarket

What HYDRAULIC ROLLER cam do you think would match the specs of that hyd flat tappet 274H06 218’/218’ @ .050” single pattern 106 LSA cam for use in a carb’d 1988 factory 305 L03?

You know, do the same thing, only using a hyd roller with the equivalent specs?

Crower 00409 is the closest I can think of to that cam
