Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
I'm currently building a 1985 sbc 305 for my 1982 Z28 and I just put a Comp Cam (12-234-2) alongside with new lifter. I want to put a double roller timing set on it but I have no clue what will fit. Do I need to put a new timing cover to fit a double roller set?
If you can find me some parts number for these Items it would greatly be apreciated. Maybe something from summit racing. I live in Canada and I want to buy some parts from Summit Racing, I know they can ship it to me but I don't if there will be some fees for the borders...?
Last thing, the engine is suppose to be from a 1985 z28, but I just want to be sure of what it is. Here's the casting number : 14010201 and another number on the other side of the engine I found : GM 5.0 LG. If anyone can tell me more about it would be nice!
201 was the typical 305 block from the early 80s; 5.0 means... 5.0.
Could easily enough have come from a 85 Z28. My 83 Z28 block is that casting.
Better question though, is what pistons are in it. If it came in a LG4, it would have dished pistons, which SUCK. If it came in a L69 or LB9, it would have flattops. MUCH better.
Would most likely have come with 416 heads no matter which engine option it was. Might be worth checking to see what those are too. Hopefully somebody hasn't swapped them to 434 or other early 305 crap, or even worse, 76cc 350 heads such as 624, 882, or 993. A dished 305 short block with those smogger heads would have compression around 7:1. Not likely to put a smile on the driver's face.
I put a Comp Cams double roller timing set in my 350 (same as for 305) and the stock cover.
That was before I knew that a standard timing chain is stronger and stretches less. The only advantage of the double roller is reduced friction...
When I took the engine apart, the pistons were flat ( the top was flat). So to my understanding, it means I should have a L69 or LB9 engine block? Also, the engine was all original. I bought the engine from the the first owner of the car. He had a 85' z28 and I bought the engine that was in it. The guy swaped it for a 305 HO to what I recall. It hasn't run since 1987. It has been in a heated garage since then in a plywood box. I assume it was pretty well stored, but I still do a full rebuild on it just to be sure.
You MAY have a L69 or LB9 SHORT BLOCK. Big difference between "block", and whatever it's assembled into. May seem like quibbling over semantics, butt it's NOT. It's VERY important to accurately make those kinds of distinctions.

What heads are on it?
Just talked with the original owner and he told me it's a bone stock LG4. I have not looked up the heads ( they arent home) but its possibly the stock ones. What ones i don't know but they haven't been changed
