91 Camaro Convertible - New Guy

Hey, just wanted to see if these boards are still alive and see if I could learn from you all here. New to Camaros and bought one cheap. In the process of restoring and have a tooooooon of questions. I guess to start off I just got done rewiring almost everything (took out a lot BS aftermarket alarms and stereo crap) and bypassed the security just so I can run it and move it around while I work on the body. Not sure when the last time the car ran (has 70k original miles) and had to replace almost every sensor and small electrical components to get it started. So my 1st cruise I noticed when i stomp the pedal it seems like response is dead and slowly builds up. Any ideas of where to start?

Thank you all and super excited to learn!

Could be almost anything. Not sure if the 1991 is carburated of TBI.

Start with simple things.
New air and fuel filter
New plugs and wires
New cap and rotor
Check ignition timing
Is the transmission TV cable installed and adjusted properly
Does the check engine light ever come on even when you first turn the key on? If it does, check for flash codes. If it does not, fix the light.

Do you have fresh fuel in it ? What is the timing set at ? If you set the timing , Did you disconect the ESC first ,reconnect after and clear the code ?

Thank you! This is great to start. It has the TPI (TunePort). Plugs/Cap and filters easy for sure the other stuff you listed I have no idea how to do, but I'm sure I can find a YouTube video or something. The check light does come on but goes away after a few. Idle is great from what I can tell. It just seems really slow going. Someone else had mentioned the TV cable so we may be on to something there! Ill get back after I run down a few things on the list. Thank you again.

Re: 91 Camaro Convertible - New Guy

I have not done any of the things you listed here. It took me forever to find the right resistance and get the wiring to where I could start it. I got so excited to drive it I took it out immediately after that and these were the things i noticed at 1st cruise.

Re: 91 Camaro Convertible - New Guy

As was already stated, do all of the tune-up stuff (plugs, wires, cap/rotor, fuel filter, air filter, etc.). Get a timing light if you don't already have one and check the base timing, adjust if neccessary. Check to make sure the throttle opens all the way from the gas pedal (need a helper for this) and then reset the TV cable. Check the fuel pressure at the service port on the fuel rail (get a test gauge if you don't have one). Checking/adjusting the IAC/throttle plate min position and TPS should be done at some point, but can wait until later. You also mentioned that the check engine light stays on for a while, which means there is an issue and there should be a stored code. Read the codes and address them as needed. None of this is very difficult, just need to methodically go through the process. All of this has been covered on this forum many times over. The search function will be your friend.

Always start with the basics and fix any obvious issues first.

Before you spend another penny on this car, do a compression test, and if that turns up any leaky cylinders, do a leakdown test to determine the specific problem. Also, test the fuel pressure. You'll then have some solid ground from which to proceed with troubleshooting.
