86 Z28 Rear Main help

Hey y’all,

I understand the 86 Z28 305 would have a 1 piece rear main… however am I able to put a 2 piece in?

and whichever way, is pulling the engine and tranny out the best way to get access?

If it has a 1pc then it only fits a 1pc. 2 pc is completely different. Pulling the transmission is much easier than the engine.

Re: 86 Z28 Rear Main help

If it is an ‘86 and the motor is original, or was replaced with an ‘86 or later motor, then it is a 1 piece rear main seal. You can’t put a 2 piece in it. Replacement will require the motor and transmission to be separated, either remove the motor or remove the transmission. Removing the transmission is easier.

Re: 86 Z28 Rear Main help

You wouldn't want the two piece anyway. Pull transmission, torque converter, and flexplate and the seal is right there. Remove, replace.
