Tech / General EngineIs your car making a strange sound or won't start? Thinking of adding power with a new combination? Need other technical information or engine specific advice? Don't see another board for your problem? Post it here!
Haven’t had the car long, I’ve been going over it a lot these past few weeks. Is this a head gasket leak? Looks like oil, could be coolant I guess
Front of the engine. Looks like the leak is either coming from the intake manifold, or head gasket. No symptoms, coolant looks clean, oil is not frothy, the exhaust does stink though on cold start with a nice plume of blue smoke. Temps are good.
It's possible the head/gasket are pitted in that spot allowing a leak. I would clean it with brake clean and once it's dry, put the cooling system under 18lbs or so of pressure with a hand held pressure tester.
If you're seeing smoke on startup, but not under acceleration, it's most likely dried valve stem seals.
What does it taste like? I'll take the guess this is the intake manifold to head area and someone used a lot of goo on the china wall seal area. Common to leak coolant in that area if the manifold is pitted.

yeah, it certainly looks like whoever did it before really slathered it on.
Pop off the intake. LOOK at it. You have to do that anyway, even if it's the head gasket (which it's probably not); start where ya gotta start anyway.
The sealant on the china wall doesn't look too abnormal to me; does however, look like it wasn't allowed to set up for awhile before the intake was slapped back on, like it needs to be.
