heater probs

on my friends 84 Z-28 that DOES NOT have AC, his heat is acting funky. It blows out of both the defrost vents and the ones in the center of the dash, but it only blows hot out of the defrost. Also, the fan only works on the High setting. does thqat sound like a dying blower motor or a vacuum line problem? I am completely stumped about the vents though. Please reply ASAP, cuz itsa snowing like a ***** and he must be very cold. TIA

MCM,

The outlet problem could be caused by a vacuum problem, damper problem, or heater control problem (ported vacuum selector).

The fan problem is likely the blower resistor or the high speed blower relay, or possibly the blower fuse. The fuse protects the lowest three speeds of the blower, and a fusible link protects the high speed. The relay switches between the three lowest speeds and the high speed. The blower resistor varied teh voltage to the fan motor at the lowest three speeds, and if it is disconnected or broken, the three lowest speeds will not function.

Your layout may be different on a non-air conditioned vehicle, but the blower components are still there somewhere.
