porting your own heads---Advice

I was wondering for those of you out there who have ported your own heads if you could reccomend books literature etc. as well as what kind of tools are neccesary to undertake the task.
I currently have an LG4 that i have taken the heads off of and have a small budget (preferrably under $1000) but tools aren't a huge problem to get.
any advice is appreciated greatly

If you really want great results, go to Barnes & Noble and get (can't remember the name) the book by David Vizard on how to build cylinder heads. Trust me on this one. You will learn a lot more than you ever hoped to know. At least as much as you can reading a book.

use the idea that more is not always better. you can go too far and end up negatively affecting performance. I used an air powered die grinder with sandpaper "burrs".

The Standard Abrasives Deluxe Porting Kit contains the aforementioned instructions in poster form (I tacked them over the bench while I did the work) and the stuff you're going to need to do the job. Air die grinder preferred. If you want to put in bigger intake valves while you're at it, have the seats roughed in by the machine shop, do the porting, take them back for the final valve job finish.

For that budget, though, you might consider starting with the World S/R Torquer 305 heads. You'll have a better product when you get done.

Cam and exhaust upgrades make the end results much more exciting.

NO, if you are going to get a valve job get used L98 Alum heads, corvette ones...YES they ARE 58cc not 64. They would be easier to port and lighten up your front end....plus they cheaper the Torqers...somthing like $400 used for a pair $450 new for each. I will be doing this on my H.O. LB9

New, the bare aluminum heads are about $50 more than bare S/R Torquer 305's. At least when I was looking at them last year.

One disadvantage of the Al heads is the lack of the exhaust cross-over passage. If you have need for EGR, you have to plumb exhaust up to the intake manifold.
