since i live in CA i got to get my car smogged every 2 yrs and they are very bitchy about everything. so what i want to do is put on a non-smog legal cam and intake but then swap it when i have to smog my car. My question is that i wil have a custom burned prom b/c iwill beswapping from 305 to 350 and the 350 will have many mods....so what will the computer do when i takeoff the old cam and intake....could i use my305 prom?
PCRS,
A "non-smog-legal" cam is one that doesn't have a C.A.R.B. cert number. That means that it may not be able to make the engine achieve acceptable emissions numbers. I seriously doubt that the visual inspection involves removing the camshaft to look for part numbers, nor measuring rocker lift. How will they know the cam doesn't have a C.A.R.B. cert?
That doesn't mean that you cannot use the cam and achieve good numbers. You may have to do some other tuning. If you are already considering a PROM rewrite, you should consider burning a second PROM for smog testing, then exchange the PROM instead of the cam and intake when test time rolls around. It ould be a lot easier and probably more effective. Ask for tips on the PROM board about tuning for emissions. You might also want to ask abotu power tuning tips for your new 350.
