Help! Ground Wire?

This may sound like a stupid question, but here goes. Where does the battery ground wire run to? On my Z28, there is a small wire that runs off the ground cable by the battery terminal to the frame. where does the negitive end of the cable run to?

The thinner part of the ground wire connects to the chassis/frame and the thicker part connects to the engine block (I think somewhere near the air pump.) Then there's also a braided strap connecting the engine block to the chassis (I think this is at the firewall.)

Mine was bolted to the alternator. There is a place on the front of the alternator that is tapped, so you can just bolt in on.

They are both right. On my 87 camaro it was originally bolted to the alternator, but after I swapped my accessories for serpentine the alternator moved, so I put it on the engine. The smaller wire always goes to the chassis.

I also put in a battery w/ top and side posts and on the top post put a 4-gauge wire to the chassis for an extra ground.
