I installed a new Sylvania headlight to replace the one on the driver's side that burnt out last September, now it's gone out again. The connection seems firm and tight, so I don't think it's loose. Could a blown out fuse be to blame?

One fuse, two headlamps. If the fuse is out you'll get niether one to light. Try a new lamp or meter the voltage at the connector.
