VIN number?

What can I learn frmo a VIN number? I just got a new 1986 T/A and I know it originally came with acarb and a 305. but I want to know what gears came stock, if it came stock with front and back disc brakes, etc. how can I find this stuff out?

The VIN won't tell you those kind of things. You need your RPO codes. Under the console lid, or in the hatch in the lock compartment. I believe there is a RPO decoder on the home page.

Those numbers are missing. The inside has been taken out of the lock box and the console. Where else can I find them?

Just a thought, but didnt GM stamp the passenger side axle tube on these cars. If you can get the letter/number code off of it, I can decode it for you. I believe it should be on the forward part of the tube close to the middle of the rear end. Im sure youll have to scrape off some rust and/or grease to see it. But its there.

With rear disc brakes in 1986, you probably have a Borg-Warner rear axle (nine bolt cover?). There were only two axle ratios available in that housing in 1986, IIRC.

I think I read somewhere that they put the RPO code stickers on the inside of the armrests on the doors.(I THINK ????)
