What do valve cover breathers actually do?

Question is simple,
What do the valve cover breathers actually do, and is it worth it to buy one??

1 they are a way to vent the crankcase preasure just like the stock hoses that run from valve covers to the intake setup, carb, or to a brether on your air cleaner setup.

2 nope not really worth it if you have a system in place the air that pases through the system has a oil mist in it so what happens is when you hook it up to your carb or whatever it goes into the engine and is harmlessly burned with the normal air.
