Timing Question

A friend of mine just got an engine put in his IROC and when he got it back the timing was all screwed up and the distributor was loose. I know how to set the timing but I don't have one of the lights that you hook up to the number 1 plug. Any recommendations on what to set the timing at or how fast the car should rev when I'm done? I've heard that setting the timing up to far can cause head gasket problems down the road. Any help? Thanks

How fast it revs? Not sure what you mean. I could set it by ear, but I learned the old school method and have done many--the best way is still using a light. Impossible to explain to you how to set it by ear, just by telling you. Get or borrow a light. Too much or too little can cause numerous problems, I suppose a head gasket could be one from pinging.
