Tighten steering tilt
Tighten steering tilt
Has anyone ever had to tighten the tilt? I'm starting to get a little slop. Not only up and down, but to the left and right. Are there any nuts and bolts I can tighten down, or is a rebuild in question.
Thanks,
Eric

bad news for ya baised on yr of your car
if your car is 82 to 88 then yes you can tighten up the tilt
if your car is 89 or up your screwed ( reason is)
i just sunk 500 buck into my 89 rs camaro it was the same way and the reason you can't go in and tighten it yourself is because gm made it so you can't get in there without special tools.
if you have an 88 or older then e-mail me at (click here to contact me) and i would be more then happy to walk you through how to fix it.
hope this helps

89 was a special yr is the only problem
89 was the first yr for the chip coded keys which are coded to the ignition switch. there are 2 safety screws on the sides of the colomn that cannot be taken out with any usual tools in your tool box. gm has these tools. I found out the hard way about this when i tore into mine. i have fixed them in the past by taking the time to go in and fix them in the past.
89 is the only yr that had these special screws that took special tools to get out of the camaro and firebird. that and the colomun is actually completely different from any other model yr. has to be 89 (its not interchangeable with any other yr. i spent 500 bucks on my because the person before me let it go to long and the column ended up twisting completely around.
you can even call a gm garage and they will tell you i am right about the special 89 yr column and how it is the only yr done this way.
not being rude just stating the facts that i do know are true.

Sorry, Red. I have an 89. I have taken my column apart, using no special tools. Vader is right, all you need is time.
The columns are the same. As for your "special screws", they are merely pivot pins. While a pivot pin remover can be bought by MAC or Snap on tools for about $20, you can make your own using a 8-32 screw, some washers, and the proper 1/2 socket. They can also be removed with a screw in dent puller.
89 was not the only year to receive these pivot pins. How do you think all the other tilt steering columns operate? Take a trip to your local junkyards if you dont believe it.
I am sorry some people preyed on your ignorance and took you for a lot of $$$. Those people should not be in business.

My apologies. That came off wrong.
Your best source of info, without a doubt...this message board. I have learned more here and my personal experience than any local shop or dealer will EVER teach me. It has allowed me to turn the tables, and do most of my own labor work, and as a last resort, taking it to a shop and most of the time knowing what needs to be done.

I did a search on MSN for " turn+signal+switch" and found a

better than flying blind. I use a small dent puller, BTW. The thought of vise-grips on those small screws scares me!
