can you install a knock sensor or cts incorrectly?

On both my knock sensor and cts (in the head) i took the old ones out and put the new ones in. The knock sensor was tough to get out, and i made sure the thread was lined up correctly, did the first few turns by hand then put the wrench to it. It was really tough to get in, i was thinking i shouldnt go any further as i was really straining. There is still some room (about 3/4") between the sensor and the block. Now the cts, due to the position of the air tubes i cant get much of anything on it. I got it threaded in and tightened it down, but there is still some thread left to go in. My car is running a little funny, cold performance blows and it makes a wierd little sound at wide open throttle. It has a slight WOT hesitation when cold, im wondering if anything i did to these sensors could be causing it. When they say torque it down to a specific ft/lbs, what if its already getting to that point without the sensor all the way in?

If it's getting too tight with the sensor having a lot of threads left, you need to remove it and clean the threads in the hole. I doubt either sensor not being in far enough would cause much problems, but it can get dangerous if your knock sensor is not in far enough. If you saw how long the cts is you can probably imagine if it is in the coolant flow or not, it needs to be. To just be safe I'd redo both of them.
