Need help quick!! (ignition)

I was driving to school today and was running about 3,000 RPMs to try and get the motor to warm up when all of a sudden the tach drops to zero but the car kinda sputtered along for a second and then died, couldn't restart it, so my friend's dad comes along, tells me I have a bad coil. run toi advance auto, get a new one, throw it on, vrrrroom, awesoem works, then it dies. . back to advance auto for a second one. . . vrooooom, then it dies. . . soi I finaly get a third one, get it all set up, all wires where they belong, start it up, runs good, drive down to the police station to say thanks to the cop that helped me out and the ****in thing dies right in front of him in the parking lot.

Every time I try to start it it just cranks and cranks with no spark, and the coil gets pretty damn hot. . . as far as I know everything is wired ok, nothin I cans ee visualy wrong, just keeps blowin them coils...... any ideas??

oh, I have an 87, but for some reason my coil isn't in cap, it is mounted to the firewall. . . .??? thanks for the help.

This is kind of voodoo, but it might be a bad ignition module. Try it anyway and see what happens. I hate those kinds of problems and I've seen my share

whats the ignition module? where is it?? could something be causing the coil to be recieving more than 12 volts and shorting out?? I mean the coil gets decently warm, nothin too bad, but the dealer said that is normal for it to get warm. is it even possible to actualy short out a coil, or do they just overheat and like a stereo amp turn themselves off??

The ignition module is within the cap&distributor assembly. My pickup coil actually sorta blew to pieces last year. I replaced the entire distributor that came with new cap, rotor, distributor, pickup coil and ignition module. Sold together and assembled, they aren't expensive.
