i got a used flywheel that's pretty rough today, can i cut it down on a brake lathe or is there a special machine just for flywheels. i have access to a brake lathe for free.

i wouldn't try. we got a brake lathe in our shop and we send ours out to a special shop to have them resurfaced. it has to be kind of swirl cut that leaves an almost polished finish

Absolutely not!! I used to work in a machine shop and turned MANY flywheels.

The flywheel machine puts a 4* taper on the flywheel so it is self cleaning. We had a few come in that had been turned on a lathe. Takes a while longer to grind those!!
