Distributor Help

Ok, it's Spring Break, and I'm not going anywhere and the weather's beautiful so I decided to give my car a tune-up. Anyway, I bought a Haynes do it yourself manual. I need to remove the distributor from my car. It says to mark the initial position of the rotor and then lift the distributor and mark the final position of the rotor when it stops turning. Anyway, what does this mean? Do I have to turn the distributor while lifting it up? Or is it that I lift the distributor straight up and the rotor turns as I lift it out of the car? I know... seems like a dumb question, but I'm a newbie and don't want to royally *&^% things up. Thanks.

Most tune-ups do not require distributor removal. What are you trying to do?

Changing my intake manifold. I just got a Superram intake manifold base for my car.
