What type of damage did I cause??
The 3rd day I had the car and I had a problem today. I was driving the car and fulled the pedal. I noticed after leting the pedal go I notice the car was staying at a consant 2500 rpm. I relized the throttle was stuck. The car wasn't stopping so I paniced. I slow the car down to around 5 mph and with out thinking put the car into park. I think I fixed the throttle stticking. I sprayed some wd40 around the throttle and all of the cables. It seems to be fine. Is there something else I could do to prvent this?? Is there another reason this happened. But the main question is what type of damage did I cause to the automatic tranny?? The car seems to shift fine. Is the some test I could do to find out if anything happened?? Please I'm new with this car and I need help. Thanks
By placing the selector in PARK with the car moving, it is possible that you polished off the parking pawl, and probably some of the edges of the grooves in the planetary shell, but probably didn't do a lot of damamge. If the transmission still holds the car while in PARK, the pawl is at least engaging and didn't break. You may want to consider a trans oil and filter change anyway, especially if you just got the car.
As for the sticking throttle, disconnect the cables and check eack one for binding by hand. As the cables begin to fail, they tend to unwrap inside the housing. They may intermittently stick, then free up, then stick again without warning. If all the cables are moving freely and smoothly, you may have simply had a sticky throttle shaft, but I wouldn't risk ignoring the cables.

You just performed the same test they perform on automatic transmissions at the end of the assembly line. They come flying up to a stop and before they get stopped, they throw 'er into "P". At least on new chevy/gmc full sized vans, they do it to every one (I saw it firsthand).
They do it to check and make sure the 'park' function works ok. You just did it again. Not good for it, but maybe you learned a lesson

I had a pretty annoying sticking throttle problem. Picked up a new throttle cable from the dealer and it was pretty much gone. Occasionally, though, it would still stick, just a LITTLE bit. My friend was in my car and he said it was the floor mat I had in it - I had already checked this, and it didn't seem to be the problem, but I figured what the hell, and took it out. Never had a sticking problem since. Stupid odd ball shapes of the floor make that mat bluge up....
