Should I get new pistons while the motor is already stripped down?

Ok......this probably happens to all of us...but invariably, when you start a project, it just gets bigger, and bigger, and bigger.........case in point. I parked my firebird and tore the motor apart for the SOLE reason of swapping on my newly acquired ported vortecs and a new timing chain. Well, of course one thing led to another and now I am putting in a solid lifter cam, full roller rockers, Super Victor intake, Moroso valley pan, centerbolt to perimter bolt valve cover conversion (to clear the non self aligning roller rockers) and a whole other list of stuff!! And all I wanted to do was change the timing chain and swap the good heads on! well anyways...my buddy suggested that since the motor is now hanging in my car camless, headless and with no accessories, why don't I pull it out and install some decent high compression pistons. Should I? Basically all I'd have to do is unbolt the tranny and pull the thing out. The pistons in it now are 4 valve relief stock replacement 350 type (.030)and since the motor is fairly new it will be fine if I bore it out to 357 (.040). I was thinking of the Silv-o-lite 10.3 CR Hyperutectics for $98.32 for a set of 8 (Cheap!!). My machine shop quoted me $90 to bore the motor, so thats only $200 total! Am I missing anything else here? What should I do? Suggestions........

Don't bore your engine out just for the hell of it, only do it if it needs to be done to repair the cylinder walls. There is still the matter of removing everything and replacing the pistons, can you do that yourself? If so, or if you're willing to pay someone else to do it, I don't see why not. Hell, why don't you just buy a larger crank while you're at it?

might as well upgrade that suspension while you have the motor out...since you have the motor out, maybe its time to rebuild that tranny....

Hey this is starting to sound like my story. I took the 305 out because it had died to put in a stock 350 w/ new bearins and rings and soforth and then...... I have bought a 3.45 bw posi rear and upgraded the breaks on it and replaced the axle bearings. I put a corvette servo in my tranny, and already have had it rebuilt w/ shift kit. I put a megashifter in it. I am using the 305 heads but they have been ported and I have larger valves, springs, cam and lifters in my room. I have a set of dual elecric fans that are going in also. I also put IROC swaybars and wonderbar on it. I had the intake ported and rebuilt the carb and put better hanger and rods in it (computer controlled quadrajet). I am putting a s10 torque converter in it and hooker lt headers and probably true duals. All I should have left to get now before I can finnish is the headers and exhaust, and I need to have the valves put in. Luckily I have another car to drive. I think that this car may just have a bit of a different attitude when I get it back on the road. (was stock lg4). Ok, I admit I got a little carried away but it was for a good cause.

Yup, costs about as much as a drug addiction, but at least there is something to show for it. lol
