What the??
What the??
Hi all! I posted this up on sethirdgen too and thought I'd post here if no one knew on sethirdgn what I came across.
Seeing as I have 4 rear rims on my car I decided to rotate them around and put my better tread on the back for better traction.
All was going good until the last wheel that I was putting on the front. I started tightening the bolts and started feeling rubbing. I had a look behind the tyre and yes the rim was not clearing the strut lip. So I took the rim off and saw that the RIM is marked 16x8x20 on the back of it.
I looked at the RIM that was on there originaly that I moved to the back of the car and that RIM is 16x8x16 all the others are the same except for that one rim.
All my rims are marked REAR and they are the 85-87 IROC style. What's up with these 2 different sizes?
PS. You guys are prpbably wondering why I have 4 rear rims on my car. Well I bought the car like that and the fronts have spacers on them. Hard to find a set of RIMS in Australia for the car but everything is okay with the spacers.

86,
In order to keep the track widths as close to perfect as possible with the 8" wide wheels, the offsets of the wheels have to be different from front to rear. The rear track is slightly wider than the front because of the axle length. The original fronts should have had a 40mm offset.
The wheels marked "REAR" are only to be used on the rear axle. Spacers are probably one way to adjust the track, but having one wheel that is 4mm deeper than the rest is really going to screw with your handling unless you are "wedging" for a circle track.
Perhaps you should measure all the spacers and make sure one of them isn't customized for the different offset, adn if so, keep the spacers with the wheels instead of the hubs. If not, you may want to customize a spacer for your "odd" wheel or hunt down a replacement. I understand the difficulty in getting replacement parts in your location, so the custom spacer idea may be the easiest thing to get you going.

RIM
Vader,
So even that the I have 4 REAR Rims on my car GM made different offsets on REAR rims? Why did they make rims 16x8x20 and make 16x8x16 REAR RIMS? I would have thought they would make all REAR rims the same and all FRONT rims with the same offset.
Does not make any sense in making 2 different sets of REAR rims.
BTW. How do you go about measuring the offsets?
Thanks,
Mike
