Youre comparing a high end neon against a regular mustang. Why don't you try it against the '03 cobra and see who wins.

Hey dip****, look at my name....does it look like I'm biased against mustangs? I'm all for the Mustang, but you can't compare a $19,000 adolescent's car with a $35,000 wealthy man's mid-age crisis car. That's an exaggeration, I know, but I'm only trying to compare cars that are practically in the same segment. The only one that's close is the Mustang GT at ~23,000 dollars. Of course, maybe I should actually get down to the price range of the neon and compare it with the V6 mustang?

this statement makes Mustangs seem slow. so your telling me you have to break out the top-of-the-line Mustang to take out a neon? :sillylol:

you have to also realize that FWD cars lose more hp at the wheel than the RWD cars.,... so alot of its hp will be lost to the FWD.
why didnt hey make the neon AWD?
also V8's will respond to mods alot better than 4 bangers and chit for muscle cars are4 a heck of a lot cheaper than ***** mods.

i would nt go by a magazine for et time either.............sometimes they can be misleading

welcome to ignorance folks...

Those numbers are, I believe, taken from one of the latest rice magazines (Sport Compact Car or something) and those horsepower numbers were achieved on a dyno. Not flywheel horsepower but wheel horsepower.

As for the price difference, how old is your car and how much did it cost brand new? Probably right around that 19 grand figure. How many BRAND NEW cars do you know that run 14.2 @ 99 and dont break the 20k brice barrier.

The comment about overtaking him on the corner at pit road is unsubstantiated as hell. Noone seems to realize that Neons have dominated stock classes in SCCA racing since their inception. try again...

I'd say the percentage of Neon drivers who can "drive" is similiar, at least, to the percentage of thirdgen camaro/firebird drivers who can "drive".

In response to the comment of the neon not being an "american" car because "the parts are imported". Yes, probably, but I'm sure the companies who make the steel, cloth, plastic etc etc for that car have helped fabricate parts for our beloved bowties. The car itself is still assembled in the United States unlike the camaro which is assembled in Quebec.

Give respect where its due folks. Face it, companies are willing and able to squeeze more and more power out of less and less displacement all for the sake of pleasing the tree hugging hippies in our government. And after all this bashing how many of you are still going to lose the girlish 4 cylinder. Go ahead, raise your hand.

yeah ill raise my hand... and extend my middle finger.

neons are junk, bottom line. they blow head gaskets regularly (i work on them, i experience it all the time) and now Chrysler is bolting on a turbo to this already weak design? you do the math. and no one has seen one at the dragstrip, so those times from magazines dont mean squat. report back to me when youve actually seen one run

after PROPER installation of the later style, MLS gasket there haven't been an exuberant amount of problems with them anymore. The earlier models, I believe pre-98 were equipped with crap gaskets and were prone to going out, as you said.

As for the magazine results, isn't it almos talways true that magazines get LESS out of a car than we can expect. That should worry you even more. According to most magazines my car ran a 14.6 or higher and my FIRST TIME out I got it down toa 14.2 and thats just an example.

All cars today are crap. They mass produced pieces of plastic covered with a steel body. Everything snaps together and oftne breaks off and this is surely not JUST a problem with those cars.

Nic, are you refering to my 1/4 speeds or something elses? I figured the speed would be close, but I know the time is slow. I'm working on traction issues as soon as I get home on break.

I was talking about the trap speed given the hp/weight ratio of the neon. I'd actually expect another mph or so out of it.

I think another hp war is beginning, however it's not going to be with the V8's like in the 60's. Several companies are starting to seriously put some research into their 4cyl engines. If this neon actually does put out over 200hp (we'll see when they build a few mass produced 200hp neons) then you can bet your bottom dollar lots of other manufacturer's will be following suit.

This makes perfect sense, these engines are the 'in thing' with the mainstream, plus they don't make a whole ton of power and probably never will, if you can get these little engines to put out 300hp or so, then your still achieving something without going overboard.

If the manufacturers started developing V8's with as much devotion, hp would start getting stupid, I mean the LS6 is already making 400+ na
that's already too much for most ppl.
600hp wouldn't be a problem for GM and Ford these days.
an hp war with v8's today would only scare away buyers.
It's much better to build a light car with less hp in todays market.

Thats just the way it's going to be

Fortunatly thirdgen's have massive potential, and it's relatively quick easy to put these cars into the 13's.
Thirdgen's will always be a force to be reckoned with.

The only good thing about this is that in 5 years they'll be one hell of a daily driver when you can pick them up well under $5k... cheap car-cheaper resale. I'll bet they'll sell ok but not like rsx's, eclipses, or, anything sportier looking. Anyway the normal 30 to 1 riceboy ratio would follow suit. 30 posers for every 1 fairly fast 1 car, so when you see a neon with srt, type r stickers, and a vtec sticker, you can assume its not a threat at all...

Then unless you're hooked up, I'd have made you sell your car as many times as you cared to run me. I had a base SOHC 96 Neon with 5-speed, K&N, and glasspack, and I gave many headaches out. Maybe my car was a freak? If you wanted to run me in your 16-sec RS, I woulda gladly bought you the tape to post up the For Sale sign.

***EDIT:
Profile for EightyEightRS - my name is greg.. i drive an 88 rs, crappy 305 for now.. only exhaust and wheels\tires so far.. ***
I'm surprised you haven't already SOLD your car :nono:

All you ignorant fools that are ******* Neons...yeah, keep laughing. I see most of you are running LG4s or L03s and most likely already got thrashed by one. That's probably where the hate is coming from. And yeah, easy 3rd gear scratches on level road. Not a bad platform, and they handle like *****, too. And for the one guy who said that if you drive a Neon, you probably can't drive...I tell ya, I drove the HELL out of that car, and it was fun.

BTW, the 2nd-gen Neons are slow, but the 1st-gens were lighter, faster, and better. And you can pick up a decent SOHC Neon now for about $2500 with a 5-speed. Throw a couple bucks into it, and you'll have a fun daily driver that's faster than a Honda (and most 3rd gens), handles better, and gets 35 mpg, and pay dick for insurance. Heh, yeah. Hi. as in "Hi, you just got beat by a BITCH car."

I love 3rdgens (see sig) but don't hate on a car that can probably beat you, and to make it worse, is driven by mostly girls and families.

And all the above is pointed towards 96-99 Neons...the SRT-4 is another matter completely...
:hail: BOOOST!!!

I completely agree. How many of you are trapping over 100 mph in the 1/4? You might take this neon off the line but when that turbo spools it'll be over...

With my L03 firebird with a K&N and a flowmaster, I was getting beat by everything, including a fawking Del Sol. So I modded more and ran a best of 14.88@91.7 with it. But I have no misconceptions about whether or not the Neon would take it. I'm also not too worried about it since the Neon is new with much better technology and the bird is 12 years old.

Yeah, the AT Neons were dogs, no matter what. The 5-speed boosted performance in that car IMMENSELY. That 2.0 is quite a torquey motor for its size. Even the base SOHC had 132 hp and 135 lb/ft. The DOHC had 150 hp and close to the same torque. Mated to the 5-speed and a good driver....15's stock. The ATs would bump it up by a whole second....

Holy ****..... Got my new Car and Driver today. They tested the neon.

****ing 14.2@102

That ET is impressive, but what's more impressive is that trap speed. That means it should have no problem putting down the new mustang GTs from a roll. It's faster than any 5.0 ever was from the factory, and for you chevy boys, it will run neck and neck with the quick LT1s.

The car is only 19,000 dollars? I'd like to take one for a test drive. For a new car, it fits in a highschooler's price range, and will outrun anything new until the 28,000 Mach 1.

I had a lot of fun racing neons in my leased durango a few years ago
the races were always damn close. 4.8L durango's and 5speed neons were an awesome match up.
down to driver and r/t

I figured I mighta had a freak durango to be able to beat up on those neons which I hear can run 15's and such.
so I gteched the durango..

consistant 17.8's :sillylol:

Call me insane, but I take magazine tests of pre production cars with a grain of salt

I have to admit stock turbo cars can see big gains with a simple electronic boost controler and fuel management system, but beyond that they are screwed. And I think I would have to see a 14.2 @ 102 stock to believe it anyway.
Even if their engines can take some tuning, I still have my doubts about their CVs and drivetrain, you would probly get some nasty torque steer too. Traction will always be a fwd pita... So no, Im not scared. Besides, 1/4 times arent everything, I could go buy a chevette or late 70s malibu and put a big block in it and some wide slicks and the times would be amazing, but honestly who gives a ****, its still a fugly piece of crap that no one on this board would want to be seen in!

Fix the CV/Halfshaft breakage problem with a PT/Shadow axle upgrade. Good for 12s at least so far and being pushed further all the time.

If I hadn't dumped a ****load of time and money into the camaro I'd trade it in for the neon.

One thing to remember about the turbo neon is that it isn't the same 2.0L thats in the regular versions with a turbo bolted on. It is the 2.4L that is in the turbo PT Cruiser. So what? you say. Well, the aftermarket was(is) putting out turbo kits that put the 2.0L up to 250+hp, imagine what could be done with that extra dispacement (remember that 0.4L added to 2.0 is a 20% increase, which compares well to the 15% increase going from a 305 to a 350). The fastest (old style) Neon I know of is running 10.55@139mph in street driven trim, it now does 9 second passes at over 150 mph. oh yea, it's still 4cyl FWD. Don't believe me? look here .

Don't get me wrong, I like thirdgens better than Neons (I sold my '95 neon to get my GTA), but of all the sport compacts out there, I'd rather see a neon doing well then any honda. To all of you saying that the neon is not a good race car, you might want to go to a local autocross. Look at the times put down by the neons then look at the F-bod times. Don't cry too much, they weigh much less than we do, which is a huge advantage.

Wow. Thanks for taking me entirely too ****ing literally.

I was merely pointing something out.

The GT mustang is not the cream of the crop mustang. Not by a long shot. As of now, the Cobra is the top dog, running 12's (unless I am misinformed).

However, this turbo Neon is the top dog neon. Thats all the better they get (from the factory).

Just because its quick enough to run with mid model mustangs and old V8's does not make it that great of a car.

Its a cheap car with a turbo on it. Yay for it.

It isnt even in the same league as a mustang, or an fbody. Its what I said earlier, a lame *** ***** bitch neon. It was designed to be a grocery getter from the get go. It was designed to be cheap so that young and lower class people could afford it. Its cheaply built to attain that cheap *** price. You get what you pay for.

And with this, youre getting a ****ty car that runs a decent time. Would I own one? Hell no.

Are you seeing my point, or am I still a dip****?

I have read that a few of you have driven a neon, but for those of you who haven't the car feels like a death trap at any speed. I seriously felt like the car was going to fly off the road and collapse around me like a tin can. I never would own one or drive in one again.

Hey not my car there einstein, yours...............

Don't be mad cause your broke @ss can't afford them..............But go ahead and make fun of them if it makes you feel better..........I mean obviously you must get something out of making fun of my car............

You should be using your time to find out who painted the car.........Looks like they got a little carried away with the silver on the gfx and painted some on your car........Is your car silver is it red??...............we'll never know.....

Here it is one more time for you......

lol, I never claimed my car was a pimp ride, y0! Ub3r! I just bought my car a couple weeks ago, a new paint job is in the works. However, it runs like a beast, even with a crappy tune,

Wanna run? Bring the bottle before ya sell it....

I see poor, poor abused thirdgens like yours all the time....especially in Vegas (when I lived there). They were usually parked near taco stands.

***Is your car silver is it red??...............we'll never know.....***

Hmmm...2-tone, maybe? A staple of the 80's, early 90's, when our cars were designed.

There ya go, the staple of any arrogant moron, making racial slurs....to put people down........

Say this to a hispanic at a taco stand and see how far you get......I'm betting my car.....that it isn't more then five feet.......why don't you go ahead and make a ******* trailer park comment while you are at it............

Oh yeah about *****'s spending more on rims then on the car....
This person spent $1919 for their rims/tires...
HAHAHAHAHAHA........there goes that commandment out the door.....unless of course this guy is a *****??.......

Let's see racial slurs, no idea what you are talking about when it comes to rims/tires.......................Yup i'm done arguing with you.......you proved my point for me..........

When you try and argue, know what the hell you are talking about.....

Ok, where to start....?
How did you construe what I said as a racial slur? Have you ever been to Las Vegas? I lived there for 5 years, and there are taco stands on every corner in the poorer sections of town. And in these sections of town are many thirdgens that are modified in ridiculous ways (as is yours). Next time you accuse someone of racism and being a "*******" you'd better know what you're talking about. I actually lived with my hispanic girlfriend for 3 years, and I'm currently seeing another one. Way to go.

And as for the blackbird in the pic...hey, that's a decent looking car! No aircraft carrier on the hatch and no bling bling Rent-a-Wheel specials. A fine example of a thirdgen. I don't see how that augments your argument....I'm sure the car cost more than $1919, which means he's not breaking the rice rule.

You should really learn to interpret what you read before lashing out and making yourself look foolish....

err...too late.... :nono:

Ok, first off, you make no sense. You're gonna tell me that the car is worth less than $1919? Ok then.....

And second, you're a ****ING IDIOT for making that last statement.

See below, nimrod. Her name is Brissia Mendez, she was born and raised in Mexico City. Doesn't get more Mexican than that, does it, ****heel? Now, go back and sit in the corner, you have been owned.

at you thinking that's a random pic....

Here's another one of her. PM me if you think I'm playing...

This pic was taken at Casa Vegas Condominiums (Vegas Valley Dr. off Maryland Pkwy), directly behind Sunrise hospital. If you look closely, you can see the radiology center.

Don't get mad because you actually PAID to make your car look *****. The best thing you can do is sell is and get a Civic.

Anyways, interupting the flame war that has sent this thread straight to hell. I don't care for the looks of the neons but, I am reasonably impressed with the performance posted. Did they change the looks of it any or is it a "sleeper":lala:

It's no sleeper! Dodge has added a split grill (for a sunfireish look), an odd looking hood scoop, different rims and tires, and last but not least (and the part that will have ricers packed into the show rooms) a completely out of place high rise spoiler.

P.S. No, I'm not jokeing.
