The cities that have street racing problems should make sure they have dragstrips open for Street Legal racing a few nights a week.

They just changed the laws Sept. 1st 2003 in Texas regarding street racing. It's now a class B misdemeanor with automatic suspension of license for 6 months (plus the arrest, plus community sevice and fines if convicted) plus car being impounded, etc...........

Street racing is only cool until you actually develop some sense of responsibility. Then you realize how stupid it really is.
Also, learning that the world extends beyond your neighborhood is a real eye opener.
There are so many ways to race and display custom cars legally, that I have absolutely no sympathy for any street racer.

I checked out that site. Pretty cool to be able to race on a highway like that. Quite different than what normal street racing is seeings how this is organized and legal.

not to mention, my avg speed is higher then a hondas top speed.
theres alot out there besides street racing to keep ya busy if you look for it....
but theres nothing wrong with a little sane street fun..... note the word sane.... that means, within reason.... and generally that crap is unplanned......
not this "street racing" like i saw in dallas or F&F or anything like that.. thats just ****ing stupid and ignorant.... instead of driving 50mi to do that there, why not just drive to the ****ing track and meet there!?

The nearest track to me is about 1 1/2 hours away minimum.
That's why there is alot of street racing in the Houston area. I dont participate in the meet up at a derserted street, block off 1/4 mile, have someone flagging the race, etc........... bullshi*.
But, if I'm driving the car arround and someone wants to play (traffic conditions being good), then I show them my tailights (and I see nothing wrong with a safe occasional "showing someone some tailights")!

Big deal. When you start getting 2 hours away you can have a semi legit complaint. During school I'd drive the hour 15 From Terre Haute to Indy to run every Tuesday. When I lived in Chicago I'd drive the 45 minutes to an hour down to Joliet to race. Originally posted by 1bad91Z

When we raced NHRA Super Stock we'd drive all over the place, Muncie, Cinci, Bowling Green, St. Louis, etc.
Driving on the street is not a competitive sport. There are no trophies, no LEGAL prize money, no records. The best you can hope for is to stay alive, keep your car, and stay out of jail.

ATOMonkey you're on the wrong board. This isn't "Scold street racers" it's theoretical and street racing. Your opinion has been noted, thanks for contributing, now stop posting flame bait.

(ATOmonkey) - Dude, quit whining! I already said that I dont participate in organized street racing. And you cant tell me that you dont get on the gas sometimes in your car when you're driving arround town.

It's really getting on my nerves how some people seem to think that your speed has to vbe exactly what the sign says. Is the fact that it's divisble by 5- a neccessary point?
The best you can do while you're driving or in any situation in life...is to do what YOU believe is right. Which I do.
Obviously, I don't believe in doing 100 in a 30 or even a 45. But I don't believe anyone else here does either.
The craziest thing is- tell me if any of you have this trouble- MOST of the people who will condemn you to hell for racing to 60-75 mph...drive that fast constantly. I have some relatives that will chew me out for racing. As a matter of fact they do occasionally. And guess what? They are the WORST SPEEDERS I know.

ATO's only point is that street racing is only cool until you actually develop some sense of responsibility. Other than that give it up. The only people that can persaude you to stop is yourself. You shouldn't be street racing if you can't figure out what the other guy is gonna do. Having some sort of depth perseption and knowing your limitations are what's gonna keep you alive.
Personally i race only when its not gonna be something that's gonna waste my time or gas. And I mainly race for $$. Being only a V6 means I can't race a whole lot, LOL.

I too am from Houston, I Never take the race to over +15 of posted (what's the point most roads are 45mph). There's a place in my area that people have been racing at since the 60's called goodnight trail. It used to be a place where people went to drag, make money, and see some awesome cars. NOW, it's where idiots go to sell dope, beat people up, start trouble and listen to Hondas. About a Thousand people are out there on Friday/Sat. nights (mostly kids). The police (a few that I'm friends with) USED to condone the racing "events". This day and age, too many shootings, fights, kids trying to act grown. The police used to drag there themselves, they hate to see that ignorant crap going down. Funny, when people are out there, the cops run the "crowds" off 3-5 times a night, and arrest the people racing. It's quite sad really. Street racing HAPPENS, it's not something to PLAN (unless it's okay with authorities). If you pull up at a light next to some guy on a nearly deserted road, and he wants to drag-DO IT. The reason things are, the way they are, is because of the import racers racing at 120 on the freeway, weaving in and out of traffic (usually in cars that weren't built to handle it). In Houston, the law got passed do to public awareness. A MASSIVE group arrest was made of of Westheimer, some people weren't racing (thay sued the police, got a police chief fired) This was like 200 people!!! Anyhow, the news made reports on it for weeks, and some money was moved around-Laws Got Made. A small note: 95% of the "racers" were "ricers". Everyone involved was to blame, not just the cops. The idiots were daggin on the main STRIP!!! What do they expect?!? This ain't no "Slow and the Furious", Intelligent street racers don't meet up in public places (with thousands of NEON lights and "systems") and expect to act out their misconceptions of street racing. Dragging goes down on back roads, or at stop lights with noone around....That movie cursed the street racing world (if it hasn't been outlawed in your town, it will be-with exceptions...) The media sees "street racing as the way it's portrayed in that movie. They NEED to go watch "The Wraith"or Bullet(hehe). REAL cars don't need an audience (except NASCAR and the person behind the wheel-also exceptions).............Anyhow sorry to drone on, It just angers me to hear my pops talkin about him racing his 57, and his buddies Roadrunner, And his friend Firebird......Drag Peacefully People...

I can agree with that. But has anyone else had to put up with this "speeding is fine, racing is evil" mentality?

My own father doesn't want me racing (drove my monte to santa fe doing 80 the whole way...at 3000 rpm). What pisses me off is that HE used to drag ALLL THE TIME! The majority of freeway traffic in houston drives 10-20 miles over the limit!!!!!! Going with the flow is REALLLLY speeding. As for the guy saying the crap about Racing being Irresponsible.... He must have somthing we don't- MONEY. I don't know tracks that let you drag for free...if there are Please tell us
Hell, if you're racing Superstock, a 13sec. street car is SLOW anyway. One of my bosses runs pro stock (with a 69Maro @ 8.7 Seconds:hail: ), thing is HE's GOT THA MONEY! Heck, if I could afford to Race even a 10sec car weekly at the track, I'd do it in a Heartbeat.....Street drag is more fun anyway...It's Called ADRENALINE....

I've done the "Tail-light Salute" a few times, but NEVER EVER have I met up woth someone and got it on, all events were sontaneous, unplanned, and a few times, I was strongly consdering NOT doing it, then the itch got me. Like just the other day, I decided to give some Bling Bling dude what he wanted - he had been hanging on my rear, revving his lil' 4-banger w/ fartcan, so I decided to shut him up. Stomped it, got to my desired cruise speed, shut it down. (Still got the loser fly-by... oh well.) And yeah, I WANT to take my car to the track, drag it down the track for real, maybe even do an autocross event or two, see if I can really drive.

Almost every time I pull up to a stop light that preceeds a merge to 1 lane, the person next to me trys to race me to it. It doesn't matter if they are in a Ferrari or a 3 cylinder Geo. It is human nature and a lot of people that don't consider themselves street racers do it. It's just not organized.
Do you think if a cop saw a soccer mom in a Tahoe smoking a little civic with a wing to the merge he would inpound her truck and give her a ticket for street racing. I doubt it.
I can see busting up the organized events. I've never liked being a part of a big crowd like that anyway. It's to damn hard to escape and really to easy to get caught with that many vehicles and people.
There's an auto shop her in town that hosts street racing at the local strip on Friday nights during the winter. I havn't been yet, but it is go to be the closest thing to street racing you can get and it's legal. They don't prep the track and there are no lights. Just a person to start the race and the two racing know who wins. 5 bucks gets you in. The guy that runs it loves drag racing street type cars and knew there would be a good turnout. So he went to the track owner and set it up. It would be nice to see that around the country.

Yea, if I had the investment capital, I would buy some land and make a track. Charge like 2 bucks a person to watch and 5 bucks to race. No timeslips or pro-tree's, just a street race track with nice asphalt, 1/4 mile marked off, baracade walls on both sides etc...
Race, watch, enter at own risk sign posted. I have a 4-wheeler and plenty of fire extinguishers (to sort of safety crew the place).
I think it's a great idea. Probably a decent money maker too along with making the streets a little safer!
Anyone in the Houston area want to invest in something like this? I know a perfect spot of land for this in the NW Houston area!

why does every track from the smallest rickety thing to a world class track like ennis always cost from $10-$15 a racer?
insurance. if you have a track, you NEED it.
it covers basic insurance and operational costs... thats about it... not a big moneymaker.. events with spectators are the money makers....

go race at a track and see if its an adrenaline rush! If not, then go get checked out by a psychiatrist.
