Spanked a 350TPI thirdgen in my 5.0 stang
Well amongst all the other 5.0 versus thirdgen post's in here recently, I thought I'd post my own little incident today. Ok so there is this guy in my Trig class in college that sometimes talks to the girl next to him about how fast his Iroc is (which is a really tacky way to hit on girls IMHO) and I've been listening in for about a week now. So far I've gathered that its a 350TPI with upgraded trans, 3.42 gears, ported intake, headers, chip and a few other things. Now here is the reason I've wanted to race him so badly...........he constantly claims to people in my class that its a "12 second hot rod", and since I pretty much know all the thirdgens in town that run 12's, I think he's full of crap.
Everytime I leave Pima I make it a habit to look for his iroc on the way out. Its a blue iroc with black painted rims. Today, while cruising back from school in my mustang, I noticed a blue thirdgen behind me. Low and behind it was the cocky bastard from my math class. We were headed down that two lane road after McDonalds on Grant by Pima West campus, and we caught the first light. He looked over, kinda realized I was the quiet kid in front of him from math class, gave a smile, and we both mashed the pedal at the light. I spun a LOT (ask my local thirdgen buddies, my mustangs spins like a motha) and he spun just a tad. We were dead even till about the end of 2nd at which point I started to pull pretty good on him. By the end of third I was a full car length ahead of him and we both quit. We tried it again with same results 3 times more until it was obvious we were attracting too much attention in 12:30pm traffic
Before he turned off, we caught one more light together, and chatted a bit. he told me how my mustang sounded good and wanted to know how much shot I was running
I laughed and told him that this was my "fast" car and that on Monday I'd drive my firebird to school and he could try racing that one because he might have a better chance.
Its going to be pretty funny to see the look on his face Monday when he races a REAL 12 second car. hahahah. Anyways, thought it would make a good post. Cant' wait to hear what BS he tells that girl on Monday about how fast his "12 second" car is even though he gets beat by a near stock mustang.

Mustangs are for little hillbilly's! I hate the fact that Mustangs are so easy to modify, but one thing they don't have is true character. Long live the F-body:hail:

Nice kill man. Its good to see a cocky fool put in there place even if it was one of us. Too bad it wasn't a 12 second honda. I like the x-pipe setup on your bird, is the ground clearance bad on it?

Personally I think its incredibly funny how people on this website in particular can be so biased towards one brand. Why limit yourself?? My brother is like that and it really pisses me off when I try to talk cars with him. He is one of those DIE HARD ford fans that would rather shoot himself in the head than buy a chevy, even if the said chevy was cheaper, and better in every way. I remember helping him shop for cars when he was looking for a sports car for his wife. We came across a KILLER deal on an LT1 6 speed trans am with less than 40K miles for something unbelievable like $6,500, and he was like "ahh, but its a pontiac, ughhh." So he ended up buying a 97 GT modular 4.6 mustang which was much slower, much more expensive, and much uglier (IMHO i don't like SN95 stangs).
If I could list all the cars I've owned recently and had fun modifying I'd be looked down upon by MANY car group web sites because I didn't stay loyal to any brand in particular. Example....I had a kickass $800 900 Turbo Saab with home made ball spring boost controller, home made exhaust, and it put high 13 second cars to shame with its 20 pounds of boost and unbelievable turbo lag, heheh. You would not BELIEVE the amount of **** my thirdgen friends gave me for buying that car. They constantly made fun of it, but finally thing is, most of the import name calling ceased after they got their asses handed to them a few times by some "swedish meatball" as they called (hahah I'm talking about you Sergio and Mike). After that car I bought a 85 305 TPI iroc with the L98 cammed 305 and 3.23 gears. That thing hauled *** for what it was, some of the cars I beat in that car include a white LT1 auto trans am (NOBODY believed that one, even though somebody from their own website, azls1.com witnessed the race on speedway
). Then after my iroc I tried a Tercel to see what driving a nice air conditioned 35 mpg car would be like. hahahah guess what, I only owned that car for a week.
Then after that car I bought the mustang. Point is people..............don't be biased towards one brand. there are lots of great cars out there. Just because your dad or your friends or whoever brainwashed you into putting that "Pee on ford" sticker on your windshield doesn't mean you have to stay an ignorant jackass forever......
Btw back on topic. I'm going to drive my Firebird to school Monday, should I try and get this next race on tape? My digital camera takes decent mpegs with sound....heheheheh if I get a video somebody here HAS to host it damnit because it will be funny.

Hey now, give credit where credit's due... I came up with "Swedish Meatball" for the Saab.
Oh, and I own Chris' former Tercel.
There are die hard enthusiasts for all brands of cars (Yes, for Tercels too, can you believe it?). I got crap from the VW crowd for buying a "******* Camaro". I got crap from the thirdgen crowd for putting work into the VW first. Screw them guys. I like cars.
I hate the Tercel.

only 35mpg in the tercel? I get 40 + in my corolla with a leaky carburator, you should get at least 40!
The tercel is a junk model anyways, the corolla and camry are pretty decent though.
I hear ya, cars are cars. I've owned and worked on so many different kinds of cars. There are always pros and cons. There really is no perfect car.
I bet half of these people who bash other cars would change thier minds if they had a chance to drive one.
There really is no replacement for the American muscle car though.
As for Mustangs, who cares if they have charactor or not....have you ever driven one?
I'm a Pontiac F-body guy myself, but I like Fords because they make these crazy cars that have a toned down look to them.
I don't know any specific models, but look at the SHO and some of the SVTs those are cars built for the driver, not to turn heads.....I like that concept.

Well I saw the guy again today, but I wasnt' in my firebird
Didnt' get a race out of him. I just realized I don't have school till Tuesday, woot. I'll get him on camera tuesday, I'm going to figure out a way to ziptie the camera to my dash pointed in the passenger direction, should make for a pretty ghetto video clip.

Yeah seriously d00d. Nice kill for sure. I hate people who state facts about their car when they have no figures to back it up. People always ask me "how much horsepower does your car have". Well because I have no slips or dyno charts I tell them 170 @ 255lbs torque as those are teh stock numbers. Chances are they are higher with all the junk I put in but won't know until I get it tested..so for now its all about the numbers I know.

Well folks, was a very interesting ride home from school today
I remembered to drive my firebird, but I forgot the damn digi-cam!
It was too long to film anyways, my camera only holds about 10 minutes of video space. So the conversation went a little like this:
(in class)
me-- "remember how we talked last week about racing again with my firebird today?"
him--"oh yeah man, did you drive the turd today?"
me--"uhhh, yeah......so are we on?"
him--"sure, but you should know I got new tires over the weekend, so THIS time I won't be spinning..."
We get out of class, walk to our cars, and first thing he says when he see's my firebird...
"whats with the cowl?"
me--"oh that, uh....just for looks, its all stock underneath"
him--"wow, check out the exhaust, did yours come with dual mufflers from the factory like that??"
me--"uhmm, yeeeah"
I start it up for him, and the look on his face when he heard the solid cammed 309 advertised duration 355 barely idleing at 1,200 rpms was just pure confusion.
him--" thats stock?"
me--"nahh, not really, so are we racing or what?"
We get in our cars and drive east on that 4 lane road north of Grant (silverbell??) opposite the direction of town until we get to a spot on the road thats void of any traffic or houses. I yell out the window that a slow roll would be better than from a stop so we could accurately start the race (hahah more like my car will spin into oblivion at any speed below 40mph). We go from a 30 roll, I start from 3rd gear (its a 3 speed TH350 btw), he honks three times to start us off ( I have no horn) I give him a good half second jump, and then I feather the gas at about 1/3 throttle to let him stay even and see how quick he is. We pull to the next light...
him---"Damn you right, that one IS slower than your mustang!"
I say--"hmmm, it was running funny that time, gimmie one more try"
We drive a little ways down the road, flip it back around (it turned into one lane so we had no room to race anymore) and did the same 30 mph roll. He honks 3 times, didn't give him a head start, and this time....I give it ALL OUT full throttle and shift at 7,000 rpms (my cam pulls to 7,200).
Took me until the middle of 2nd (couple seconds into the race) to FLY by him (while spinning and almost sliding into him btw) like he was stuck in reverse. By the time we let off, which was about 100mph for me, probably 65 mph for him
I was at least 20 cars ahead of him, probably more than that, too far to tell.
Before we drove our seperate ways, we drove slow next to each other and chatted again for a moment, and he asks me "dont' lie to me...how big of a shot was that??" I try to explain to him that it was all motor even though the car DID have a nitrous system, and he wouldnt' believe me!
Anyways, should be pretty funny when we talk in class tommorow, he's convinced I sprayed on him. I'm going to bring him a timeslip and explain to him that he just raced a REAL 12 second car, and that his car would probably pull a mid 15.

hey i think the only reason the mustang is fast is only because they are about 1000 lbs lighter than a GTA and for every 100lbs is .10 of second off so thats why its so easy to get them fast..that and theres way more part distrib. for them rather than for third gen.ers....just my 2 cents

1991 Mustang GT hatch weight: 2834 lbs
1991 GT 5.0 engine: HP 225/ TQ 295
My car for comparison:
1990 Camaro Iroc-Z: 3103 lbs (mine weighed 3400 at the track
)
1990 Iroc-Z engine: HP 245/ TQ 340
Information taken from consumerguide.com.
After you include the pulleys and gears he's got in it, it's easily explained why he beats thirdgens around here (which are mostly stock). His engine specs are around what a 1989 L98 would be, and he weighs 300+ lbs less. Plus he drives it like he stole it.

And before anyone gives the "Well the other car has blah blah blah" argument...
The other car has 3.42 gears and a 350 TPI. TPI was designed for a 305, and it's well known that it chokes itself at around 4400 RPM. He put gears in it, so he hits that RPM sooner. I had long tube runners until 3 weeks ago.... ask me where in the race I lost every time.
Long tube runners are "teh suck" unless you're towing your mobile home around. (Yeehaw!)

My car weighed 3200 at the track, and the other GTA on here was 3400, that is a difference of 200 lbs, not 1000!
So much MISINFORMATION it hurts sometimes to read these boards.

EDIT: The reason they are fast is because of a good suspension design, good motor design, great aftermarket, and respond well to mods. Lightweight is in there also, so wouldnt that make them a better platform for racing than...

Man are you crazy? Do you have any idea how much 1,000lbs is. Except for that new lotus, I don't think there making a car 1,000lb lighter than ours. Third gens are anywhere from 3200-3600 lbs, now I don't know how much a stang weighs but I would guess about 3000 (stang guys help me out here).
Great kills I love beating the crap talkers who add a flowmaster and think there car pulls 12's. Your Formula sounds downright awesome.

im goin off of my buddy's almost-stock 5.0 90-92 stang lx notchback that wieghed in at 2456 lbs and mine wieghed 3523 lbs there is your 1000 lbs..the only thing he took off his car was the rear seats, truck carpet, and spare tire.... don't think that would add 700lbs there to get 3000 lbs car.....

There is no physical way a 5.0 Mustang, whether be a hatch, coupe, vert, GT or LX will weigh that little. You may wonder how I know, well I have worked on, in, under, and all around probably 150 Mustangs in my time, and a bunch of them have been weighed, and NONE even come close to that weight, with more stuff taken out!
2456 lbs is total

Rear seats= 20 pounds
carpet= 20 pounds
spare tire jack=50 pounds.
Thats 90 pounds total, and stock notchback stangs weigh about 3,150, so my guess is more around 3,000ish pounds.

Didn't talk much with the guy in class today because we had a quiz. We did talk on the way out to the car, he asked to see under the hood of the car, but I drove the stang today. I told him that my firebird ran a 7.70 1/8 mile which converts to a 12.0 1/4 mile time, and that my mustang was closer to high 13's corrected. He still thinks his car could pull a 12, so I asked him if he'd like to race the mustang again, he said no
Oh well. I popped the hood on my mustang for him and he instantly thought I had a Cobra motor because some jackass that owned the mustang before me put the cobra 5.0 plate on the top of my intake. "Oh I see why you won......got the cobra motor ehh?" .........."Uhmmm nope, its bone stock, even has the stock air box, all it has is the pullies you see there and the gears."

So basically he's either in denial or needs to be smacked with a cluebat.
Let him run mrt89rs and have Mike bring his timeslip.
