A word about rolling starts and other streetracing stuff...
I have a word about rolling starts, but this word will not make it past the filter. Rolling starts are for RICERS! I have been seeing a rediculous trend in posts and decided to voice my opinions here instead of in any one elses Thread. That way this is not construed as a personal attack, and so no one takes it as a troll. I must tell you that here in the rocky mountain region where we have limited dragstrips. Rolling starts are a still considered a sign of weakness. They are for FWD junk, not for mighty thirdgens. Improve your skills, learn to back pedal, make your car hook, but don't roll start. Not even the 8 second street cars will do a rolling start. Races are won and lost at the start. If you need a rolling start against me, then I don't care, win or lose I will still launch from a stand still. I would be embarassed to do a rolling start.
The only time I exception I could think of would be pulling away from a stoplight and some *** desides to jump on it. Once a guytried this with me and after being stomped at several lights he finally tried to play it off and rolled down his window and said, "I just wanted over in that lane."
To him I simply said, "There is plenty of room behind me..."

well lighting the tires up is kinda loud and can be heard blocks away so rolling starts are good to keep the attention away from you even know engines roar

Its like that a little here. Some cars lack torque
and they will not go from a stop.
I always try and go from a stop. But for example last week I was crusin and a new black vette pulled up next to me. We couldnt stop in the middle of traffic, so we went from a roll.
And boy did I get toasted

you're in the mountians, and im where there are no safe surface streets and plenty of open hwy.
rolling starts are the only "sane" way to play in alot of places.

I always try to go from a stop, its a hell of a lot more fun ripping through the gears rather than dropping into one. But think realisticly. How often are you gonna be lined up with someone right next to you who wants to go at it without anyone in front of you at a stop light? It doesn't happen very often and I take the chance everytime I get, given its safe enough to do. Its only a weakness if someone refuses to go from a stop and only from a roll. Its all in good fun.
well i like to go from a stop because my stroker makes close to 500ft.lbs can we say wheely i love my 2ngen wonder but me wants a 3rd gen to drive daily power with style and confert u cant go wrong the 81 is a little roght to ride in to much a drag car and not enoght street long story short i want to get another camaro a 1987- 1992 irocz or z28 and yea i know that the iroc-z is a z28 me love f-bodys yayyyyyyyy

You can build 1000 hp, but if you can't get it to the ground, it's useless. Now ask me why I did suspension to my car before the engine mods.

Why don't we all just stop street racing altogether and do nothing but go to the track..
As was said before, the oppurtunity isn't always there, so take what you get or just stay home.

I dont have a problem with rolling starts. I just raced my Camaro against my friends Camaro twice from a roll@50mph. It took him both times, and he literaly has 100 more HP than me. I have the better gears. I wouldnt call a race from a roll a "drag race"...just a race. Still fun.

I actually prefer rolling starts.... takes out any problem of traction and doesn't allow for any excuses. It also shows how much faster a 12.0 car is than a 13.0 car - its painfully obvious from a roll.

i know some guys who drop half a second in the 60'.. they run 1.5s and turn high 11s.... but really they have mid 12 second motors... they're just taking advantage and using all the power they have available.
meanwhile, i know some guys who have the motor to get in the low 11s, but are at low 12s to high 11s because they cant launch the car.
however from a roll, the 12second car beats the high 11 car because its pure HP vs weight + air resistance.

Only time I race from roll is about at 40-50 mph when going to work. Its a three lane highway about mile and half long before my exit. An off ramp connects one road to this highway and sometimes a tuner or other cars that I would race come down and merg in. sometimes they come past me and gun it so I return fire and win
(Ok most times!
) It is fun but nowhere near as cool, fun and even as exciting as from a stand still.
Much more talent is involved from a stop with control of your power. That's why I practice! lol
Its all about being a good driver knowing your limits and capabilities and not talk smack about how fast your car is or anything like that. Leave that to the wanna be tuner boys who dont know racing. Not saying that all imports are not racers but most around my area are mostly show and think go. Thanks to me I am educating them daily.
I hate spinning tires as an excuse for loosing but it happens. I sometimes fall on that and hit myself for it.
Horsepower sells but aint nothing but wasted money if traction is not present.

Even if you have a 'mighty thirdgen' it's still no good for the car or any car for that matter to go from a stop.
Starting from a roll isn't much better for the car, but it is much easier on it than racing from a complete stop. Your car will last longer if you race this way more than drag racing.....it will last a helluva lot longer if you don't race it all.......but who here actually does that?
I used to go after anyone who challenged me from a roll and beat them or kept up with them most of the time. If you have a powerfull car, you can still break loose from a roll.
My advice is: if you can't keep up with the 'wimpy FWD' cars from a roll, get a real car!
I would have to say a race is a race. If both drivers agree to a drag off the line, cool. If it happens to be in motion, that's fun too.
I also think that the track is the ONLY place to get accurate times and compare both cars. I'm not the most knowledgable of the drag scene, but I know that the tree and everything else they have at a track is more accurate than a public traffic light and a few witnesses.

You know, a lot of those nitro burning dragsters have problems hooking from a stop sometimes, maybe they should try going from a roll.

Its like that a little here. Some cars lack torque
and they will not go from a stop. You will learn once you make your car faster than 12's that starting a street race from a dead stop is damn near IMPOSSIBLE with the amount of torque available and gearing neccessary to put a car into that kind of E.T. range. Unless you always drive on slicks or your car isn't really that fast to begin with, racing from a stop is pointless. There are exceptions to this (cars with mild gears or a lack of power until nitrous/turbo/power adder kicks in), but the majority of the "quicker" cars must race from a roll otherwise its just a battle of who can afford the more expensive tires and suspension, not driver/car.

*shrug*, I prefer from a stop, like I said its a hell of a lot more fun but its gotta be safe and that doesn't happen very often, hell getting a stop is about as scarce as finding someone who will go from a roll. I always had idiots trying to get me to race when thier is traffic ahead and I just ignore them, same when its from a stop. Bottom line is, it is hardly ideal to go out on the weekend and look for cars hanging aroudn stop lights to get the "Ideal" race. I get what I can when im out cruising and I go to the track for some all out fun.

Dude, racing in general is basically a battle of who can afford the bigger engine
If I happen to get challenged on a roll it`ll go thru first&second in a blaze of glory too
If teh tires are ready It`s all over by the middle of second usually!

Ok, racing is a battle of who has the most money.
7000$ engine and stock suspension (not saying yours is), won't get you far.
2000$ suspension and stock motor, won't get you far.
I personally have a little in the engine, rest in the suspension/tires. I hook and go, using all the power I have. Then there's people like ChrisFormula, who just 9 months ago, beat me from a light because his car spins faster than mine hooked. But both of our cars are fairly different now. I could probably take him on the street (up to 90 mph), but only on nitrous. Until he finishes his nitrous..... dick.

Wow, gotta keep this one on the list of touchy subjects. I guess rolling starts would qualify somewhere. But the car rag wannas go by 0-60 times and the grease monkeys go by 1/4 mi times. Both are from dead stops. The car is supposed to be a package, not just motor. If that were the cars I got a helluva lot more cars than I thought. When I did it, I always found a light. If you didn't want to line up you didn't really want to race. Why do I try and hit my suspension early?
Yea, dick isn't but r*dneck is.

Street racing kinda sucks sometimes because of some places where roads are not of the greatest quality or short or uphill/downhill. I always raced short distances and once I realize i have them I shutdown. No point in risking something stupid like tickets or breakage.
Now if it is close I go till either they pull away or I start to go ahead or dead even heat.
A perfert "street race" should be at a stop because drag racing heritage has always been from a stop. (Fast N furious went from a stop
Even a car with lots of torque and hp should go from a stop. If you cant hook and race and loose and get upset over it, then you should look into doing serious suspension/tire combos to help out. If drag radials on 9 to 11 inch rims and complete suspension overhaul cant solve traction problems then you have too much power and should give your motor to me

I dont think racing from a roll is for ricers or sissies. Its just a different type of race man. Some guys prefer the top end racing over drag racing from a stop. In Japan its called Wangan (named after a freeway). They dont do it because they can't race from a stop. They do it because people in the countries that their cars originate from do it. Untill you've ridden in a real car built for that top end type of racing, you won't understand (I'm talking 700+hp Supras/RX7/etc). I dont know if you've ever played 'Tokyo Extreme Racer' but that pretty much covers this top end, start from a roll type of racing. I mean, I know thats just a video game and stuff, but thats how its done in Japan. People dont race stoplight to stoplight. And if you wonder why all the guys with Imports do it, now you know (and no its not the stupid video games).
This is how I see it, if you dont want to race from a roll then dont. Simple as that. What are you going to gain by coming to a messageboard and dissing on anyone that likes to race from a roll. What you cant keep up with them or something? Damn I get pulled hard by my friends Supra (both from a roll and a stop) and I'm not gonna go complain about it on messageboards.

nope.
racing in general is the battle of maximizing what you have.
sure it may cost money, but dont forget about the guy who doesnt pay alot, but goes fast..... sure its a klunky POS, but its still fast.
i think my statement above covers everything... from making power and not putting it to the ground, to modding suspension for 1.5 60's to put a mid 12second car into the 11s.... its all about making best use of what you have.

Yet the misguided guys that feel this form of racing is "its for real man it is" have never even driven a RWD japanese car let alone one that could fry it's tires around every corner. Either that or they don't know as much about that sport as they need to. It just seems to me funny that the same guys that drive cars that are not even legitimate sports cars (FWD econo cars all dressed out) are the same ones worshipping the first form of racing that features cars they wish they could own, and its not even a legitimate form of competition. The irony is so thick you need a shaped charge to cut it.

sure its horribly abusive to the car and wastes tires like crazy (like racing)
but it sure is fun as hell to do.
theres no way you're going to convince me that you dont get atLEAST a smirk on your face when you give it a lil gas around a corner and the back steps out a bit.

btw, the competition isnt racing. its a "style" thing.
put it at teh same level as the stunt competitions they have for sportbikes...
or possibly with other "extreme sports" things such as freestyle motorcross, vert ramp sports (bike, skateboard, ect), surfing... you get the idea.
a panel of judges rate according to style, difficulty, ect...
but in anycase, im not a fan of formal drifting... i just like to do a lil slide as im going across the walmart parking lot.

im not sure if im reading sarcasm or not.
donuts are gay. you just turn the wheel and waste tires. i feel teh same about burnouts off the track (and excessive ones on the track)
doing stuff like that at meets, gatherings, ect is also gay. you do that where i hang out, and i will personally haul your *** out of the car and let you know how unimpressed we are.
im talking more about sliding the car in a quick fun manner. no its not hard, and its not really a "skill".. but somthign you can do for personal amusement.

Teaching them definitely works
bitching about it ensures that they understand that this type of behavior from third genners is barely on step in the evolutionary chain from knuckle dragging ricers. Also it ensures that they know that the rest of this behavior is not acceptable except to ricers.

Well since everyone seems to be misunderstanding what I'm saying...
The comment about "battle of the bigger engine" was directed at ChrisFormula, and Chris only. As for the "maximizing what you have" comment by MrDude_1, you can maximize a 305 all you want, a 427 will walk you. "Wah wah, 305 can be fast!" Yes, I know, I got beat by one last night in the top end... but if you put the same mods into a bigger motor, it will go faster.
Top end racing on the street is about the dumbest thing you can do IMHO. A street race is usually over by about 100 mph, within a half mile. A top end race is going to go for miles, to allow to build speed all the way to top end and hold it for some sort of time. A lot more time and distance for something bad to happen.
It boils down to this. If you are DRAG racing, it's from a stop. If you can't hook, get tires (mrt89rs did
). Sure there's a point where you'll have too much power to hook slicks on the street (which is more power than most are running). In that case, learn to roll into the damn pedal. Most cars racing can't just take a full stomp of the pedal from a standstill, geezus people. Since I finally got good tires for my setup, I'm actually having to teach myself that I *can* stomp it now.
The main reason I see people racing from a roll isn't because they can't catch a light, it's because they "have too much power." If you split your money between the motor and the suspension/tires, you'll have a consistent fast car instead of a faster car only when conditions are perfect. I don't know about you, but when I get up on it, I like knowing that it's going to hook every time and run fast every time. Everyone has in their mind "I want my car faster", a car blowing off the tires isn't fast relative to the ground. :P
And here's what I'll get flamed for the most:
Learn to f'in launch, people.

two dudes with a 427. one learns to launch (see your bitch..err.. comment below
) and works on his 60'. the other just tries to squeek more power out.the guy with the 60' keeps winning because hes putting it to the ground where it covers the most time.
dont take it to idiotic status. no matter how much you maximize your 1.8liter N/A honda, a "weak" 502 ramjet in a stock vette will beat it. im just saying that in racing (where the cars are usually held to rules and are as close to equal as possible) the guy that maximizes the useage of what he has... wins.

Damn you all have some strong opinions about how to race, what kind of start, sliding isn't racing etc. A street race is just that, usually a haphazard event with no real rule book or guidlines when you run across someone at the light or on the freeway. If you don't want to participate than don't. But c'mon when we are all out doing these illegal/dangerous maneuvers in our cars, lets just keep in mind we do it for one reason, FUN!!! Because we get a kick out of it, not because we have to, or if we are going to, we need to follow the "RULES" because thats the whole point we are breaking the rules so we can have that kick you in the ****, put a grin on your face, make your butt cheeks pucker kinda fun. So everyone quit there whining and complaining because someone elses fun doesn't match yours. If you don't like racing from a roll don't. If your worried about the guy calling you a wimp and your car is slow, screw him, who cares, you really want to prove whos faster do it in a controlled environment I.E. the race track. Now shut up and go burn some tires up

(for these cars) You can NOT make generalizations on 60 ft times. Their are way too many factors, track conditions being the ultimate factor. I know that in Tucson, any 60 ft under 2.0 is SERIOUSLY hooking, and yet it seems at other track around the country a 2.0 isn't that fast, so I don't know what to tell ya other than different tracks produce different results. A stock thirdgen in Tucson (eric...I said STOCK) will NEVER EVER pull under a 2.0 60 ft, and I'm willing to put money down on that. Now add sticky tires and a few mods and you'll be getting near 2.0, again IN TUCSON. Go up to phoenix, and apparantely all those guys are ripping 1.8s with stock suspension and mild mods. Go figure.
BTW, whoever started the convno on top speed racing, you are ****ing retarded. Top speed racing on the street is dumber than sticking your dick in a blender. Hell I usually don't even race to the 1/4 mile mark on the street, I go to about 90, no faster. If you haven't caught up by 90 you won't by the 1/4 anyways.
