5MPH from guting the cat./converter!!!!!

well it all started when i was replaceing the trans mount.... when my bro saw my cat. and said lets gut the f*cker. so we did (took forever) and we whent for a littel rip around the town... and then after it all i droped him off and i took me car to a road where we test all of our cars... it is a road where we start at a stopsign and acel. to a speed limit sign down the road...

now... i have a 1986 IROC with a TPI 305 and a 700R4 tranny
---------with SLP runners/ K&N filters/ Hooker cat-back... i hit 79 or 80 mph

---------with the same modds and a new tranny mount and gutting the cat/ converter i hit 85MPH

plus it sounds cooler so i thought i'd share with everyone

Well, take it to the track and see... because that way to measure it is extremely inaccurate!

What type of pipe did you use. I was thinking of doing this to my TA.

I've done a track comparison of open pipe versus cat/muffler and it was worth exactly 1.5 tenths and 1.3 mph. No way you'll get 5mph just from gutting it. 5 mph is like 50 extra HP, thats a LOT.

LOL< believe what you want... I went from 98 mph to 103 by changing shorties to Long Tubes, changing a catted mid pipe to an off road, and a set of pulleys... And I checked it the REAL way, at a race track with timeslips to prove my findings, not flooring it on a some road and looking at the speedo. Believe what you want, noones going to change your mind, but dont think your going to see 5 mph on your 1/4 times from it!

Actually, just gutting the cat tends to hurt performance because of increased turbulence. The correct way to do it is to put a pipe through the middle of it and weld the cat around it (to pass a visual, otherwise just remove the cat for a piece of pipe). Hell, if you did that, you might see another 5-7MPH improvement..

Yeah, right man. Your increased MPH was probably because your car was able to put the power to the ground quicker and more efficiently with a non-broken trans mount..

Damn, why is everyone so damn negative on this board? Cut the guy some slack, jeez, you guys make everythign sound like your word is solid. Believe what you want, its obvious he did notice a difference, hell, replacing a 15 year old cat and just gutting it, your bound to notice something, give the guy a break and find something better to do than check the boards here for bull ****ers.

The cat on my fathers 79 Nova was replaced after it was about 8 years old and replacing it made a HUGE difference.

I believe he could have seen a 5 mph gain. If his cat was in bad shape, then he'd easily see a gain.

the word "FiretrUCK" should be used a little less.

We should give a break to a guy calling us f*****g this and f*****g that? Noone jumped up and attacked him, yet on both of his posts he did attack everyone else...

take it easy cuz your mad at me cuz it didn't cost me anything to make my car faster
Dont worry about this, Im not mad at you at all... I have done plenty to make my car faster for free, so I can see why your happy, but telling people to f**k off, thats probably not the best way to deal with the non believers!

This isn't on the right board but this discussion is stupid anyway. A clogged catalytic convertor hurting performance? Unclogging it so the exhaust gasses can flow freely allows you to go faster? Never!
