This guy I go to school with and me have been talking of racing each other. Well, he threw a rod in his 305 so he put a 350 in its place. Today, I was taking a friend home and he follows me. I go down a long road with 1 stop sign and he floors it to pass me. I feel like being an a$$ and do the same, I was at his 1/4 by the time my car shifted and slowly caught up to him and we were dead even until the stop sign. We got up to about 65 anyways (yes, I know-not smart) and I let off so I or he won't run it. Well, he flies thru it and I stopped. I have no clue how he did so well.

His mods: 350TBI, flowmaster sound-alike muffler, Ram air hood, open element air cleaner, chip, 5 spd. (I've worked on this car several times)

My mods: 355 carb., Hedman headers and Y-pipe, 3" flowmaster catback (no cat.), Cam with .465" lift and 282* duration, Edelbrock Performer EPS intake maniflod, Holley 600cfm carb.

Im not saying my ars crazy fast, but I wouldve guessed I would've won. The only thing I can think of is that I had my friend in the car (300lbs) and his stock gears are better than mine. I'm thinking of putting paint on hold and getting 3.73s now. I know he's gonna go around saying he won, oh well.

What heads you be running on your 355? Could be your bottleneck if you've got some 76 CC smoggers.

Also, if he's got a decent chip, his ignition timing is probably a lot more dead on than yours with that cam. Might want to look into an advance weight set for your vacuum advance and spend some time fine tuning your base timing. Could make a huge difference.

When I had my L03 RS I had a similar race with a buddy with an LG4 Monte Carlo with similar mods to yours, and I put 3 cars or so on him. He had better mods and better breathing induction system, along with being in a much lighter car (baseline 80s G-bodies only weigh ~3000 lbs), but I had chip work and a much better torque curve and throttle response because of it.

Parts don't mean a whole lot if you're not dialed in right. I've seen more than a few motors ordered part by part outta Jegs and just thrown together without any tuning and be slow as dogs. Throwing a cam into the whole mix definitely makes tuning an issue, and yours has enough duration to neccisitate some additional tuning.

If his L05 is in good running shape and has decent headers-back exhaust, he could be pushing around 215 or 220 hp with those mods, and well over 300 lb-ft.

What 350 did your friend put in his RS? What heads/cam/intake, etc?

From what platform? Do you know by chance? There were 150hp 350's and 390hp 350's. Your combo should be faster. I only say that because I doubt he did all that was necessary to make a 350 TBI work.

What are the last three casting numbers on your heads? You can tell by pulling a valve cover. www.mortec.com.

Do you know if you have Z28 springs? If so get some 1.6 rockers that should get you about 10 or so more hp. I think with your setup if you start from a dig you should win everytime. With your cam down low should be where you make power.

Those are 76 CCers as well. Low compression is hurting your setup. Given that they were made from 75-86, I'm going to say they aren't terribly good in terms of airflow.

Your next $700 should be spent for a set of Vortecs and a Vortec Performer Intake.
