89 GTA vs. 00 Vette

A buddy of mine has done the t-56 tranny conversion on his 89 GTA 350. He also has the flowmaster cat-back system, K&N filter, MSD ignition, a chip and some other stuff done. Anyway, him and I take it out for a test drive after his conversion. We hit the highway and pull up next to a 00 vette. The guy hears us coming and floors the car. My buddy downshifted to fourth and kept right up with him. He had a slight edge on us until about 110. We passed him in 5th gear with one more gear to go. It put a big smile on our faces when we saw the look of shock that his 40K + car could not keep up with a 3rd gen with under 10k put in. He may have had more power, but we had the gear set up to pass him. Just comes to show that power isn't the only thing needed to make your car fast.

Not saying I don't believe you, it would be stupid of you to make it up. But, anyone else think that isn't right. I mean that Vette has a top speed of more than the GTA and is quicker in the 1/4. With the mods the GTA is probably at what high 13's. Maybe the old guy just couldn't drive or he let up, but either way you beat him I guess.

I think it the vette was an automatic. He may be faster, but we just had better gearing and were able to stay in the proper powerband. A four speed auto versus a 6 speed manual and it makes better sense. Hoper that clarifies it.

Mark it is totally possible cause I did it too. With the mods in the sig and on the highway I got behind a vette (don't really know the year but it had the exhaust out the middle on the rear end) and I beat him.
Now let me tell you that it was not easy cause he got the jump on me with 2-3 car lengths. But at 120 mph I got up to him and started to pass then we let off.
So I believe him.

If you don't know what year the vette you beat is, you really can't compare your race with that vette with the race between the GTA and the '00. There's a difference between say a 16-second L82 corvette and a new LS1 corvette that can easily run 13's stock. However, I can see a GTA with those kind of mods edging out a '00 corvette.

My newest Ride:

'85 Silver L98 Corvette w/4+3 manual tranny. not bad for $3500.

i am doubtful of this. even if it was an automatic, he is puttin like 160 more horsepower down than you if its an ls6, and unless your buddy has some serious mods i am not gonna call bs, but say maybe the guy wasnt trying or his car was having probs or something.

Lol i raced an M3 - thats gotta suck when you realize you paid su much for a car which gets raped by a 19 year old carbed 3600 pund car! :P Although the SB400 probably helped a little... :>
