Back from the mechanic... but...

So I went to the mechanic today. He put in a 180 degree stainless steel thermostat like I asked. He flushed the radiator, put in new antifreeze/water, etc.

It wasn't as easy as you guys said to get that thing off. Had to take off a bunch of stuff around it. But anyways.

Cost me $40. Pretty cheap huh, I thought so myself. That's labour/parts included.

I did however go pick-up a part for him when he told me to go for a drive and see my engine temperature. Let's just say I must've been there for a good 3 hours because there were about 10 people surrounding my car asking me all these questions. Scary part was when an old guy came up to me while I was leaving and said "you're a beautiful young man with a beautiful car, *** bless you!". Heheh!

Anyhow, as for the engine temperature, it still seems a bit erratic. I found the problem out though. The FAN only turns on once the engine hits around 110 degrees!!! What gives!

I told him we could wire a switch into my car where I can turn the fan on when needed. Any other solutions?

Recalibrate your ecm to turn the fan on earlier. Anyone with ecm tuning tools should be able to do that no prob. As for the cost of it, I think I will put it the mastercard way.

gas to drive to shop... 2$
180 thermostat... 10$
Mechanics fee to change it... 30$
sense of gratifacation, accomplishment and bonding with car when doing it yourself... PRICELESS

Not trying to nock ya easy, but people arnt saying your mechanic is trying to rip you off (he sounds like one of the better ones out there), theyre just saying that you would love your car that much more.

Cost to re & re warped fried overheated heads -- $1300 at your buddy's shop and about $2200 at GM.

$40 is a deal. There are tech notes on the BIG board for wiring your 2nd fan to a switch. There is another technote about jumping the 2nd fan to the 1st so they go on together.

I think I'll check into that this weekend it could be fun to do.

Reminder ... don't let your 305 run hot mine runs on the 6th and 7th notch from the "40" no where near the "100" it is always on the edge of closed loop what is that 180f ???? No reason yours shouldn't be there.

Hey 92zeddar what does yours run at ?

Oh yeah you could try some Water Wetter I hear it is good for 15degrees cooler ??? But I've never tried it.

adious,
RP.

not bother with rewireing your fan. they have temp switches to turn it on at a lower temp. the fan switch is in the head just blow the headers on the passenger side of the car. you can get them in 160 and 180. you have to get the one that will match your thermostat. and they work great at turning on your fan sooner

I hooked my fans in parrellel with a switch. I put high guage wire so they don't heat up and can take the amps. Hot wires them to a switch under my dash. I can turn them when i want. Im also runnin a 160 thermo. Its about a 30 minute procedure.

My car rarely runs past 105 C...

I have a fan switch wired in my car, I flip it on whenever, lately though I've rarely touched the switch...

Only in downtown traffic will I use it..

Easy I can show you how to do it with a simple radio shack switch, some wire and time... it only took me a good 15 mins, but worth a lot of peace of mind.
