Fear not, I know too.. I followed DB, DBZ, DBGT when I was a kid... all in original japanese no less... much funnier I think as the whole series aren't brought down to PG ratings...

That is Super Saiyajin.

Super Saiyajin 2 is next. more hair stands up stright and the body has small electircal shocks surround it.

Super Sayiajin 3 comes next. Long hair, face changes, electrical effects.
