Newbie Questions

Hi I am new here. I don't have a 3rd gen but for many years it has been my dream car. (I am finally able to afford one)
My questions is: I am looking for a t roof or vert in decent shape something I could drive right away. It must be a v8 prefer standard but will do auto.Iroc,Z or RS.
How much would I be looking at spending in Canadian funds?

I know of a 88 vert RS 305tbi auto in decent shape don't know the milage but he is asking
$8000 is that a good price?

I also posted this in the canadian fourms
Thanks in advance
Dukie

Car: 92 RS Vert
Engine: 355
Transmission: T5
Axle/Gears: 342
Re: Newbie Questions

I woulda imagine that vert is automatic?
That seems to be the going rate on the autotrader around here but there are a couple cheaper ones. Keep in mind that you probably will not like that 305. I have the same engine and it will be making its way out of the car over the winter lol

good luck but personally I wouldnt go with a hartop but thats just my preference!

to tell you the truth i will be picking up a vert in the next couple of years, and i wont even bother looking in canada for one, with the way the dollar is i will be searching in the southern states for one, they seam to be alot cheaper down there than up here in canada.

Re: Newbie Questions

How hard is it to bring one up from the states?
Also, what is wrong with the 305? My father had one in his cutlass and it seemed to work ok. Of course I would like a larger engine, but this 88 vert seems really nice. I will get a mechanic to check it out first.

Re: Newbie Questions

tbi 305s are just slow thats all, my car is too low right now so its ok for me lol

its not that bad to bring a car back but you will need some different inspections and paperwork. My 92 vert is from florida, it needed daytime running lights installed for the import inspection.

if you go to www.ccfbg.com there is a couple of people who have imported cars from the states ( triggergta , merc3065) they would be able to help you out more with how hard it is to import a car.

Re: Newbie Questions

First.welcome to the board. The ccfbg site is a good local resource.

The 305 tbi engine made 170hp. A 305 TPI makes anywhere from 195hp to 220hp depending on the year and trans (a stick makes more than an auto). I just swapped a tbi for a TPI motor and I notice a difference right off the line. The TPI seems smoother. If you go for a hardtop stay away from t-tops as they tend to leak due to body flex. Install a set of sub-frame connectors (sfc's). It realy makes a huge difference in the way the car handles.

Good luck...........

if the car is older than 15 years its very easy to import. run a search in this section there is about 3 topics about how it is done.

also if you get one from the US keep in mind that not all states etest and you might have add alot of smog **** to get it back on the road here

8-15g for one up here.

if it was me i would be keeping an eye out for one that does not need etesting. IE 87 and older... if they even made verts back then???

Re: Newbie Questions

It shouldn't make a difference now as the 92's have turned 15 years old. I imported my IROC from the states last year for 8000. It has 37,000 orginal miles on it (but 305/auto, that doesn't matter as I'm doing a LS7/T56 swap and the engine is already out of the car). I bought the car for the condition of the body, no rust, immaculate interior. Importing is the way to go, especially with the price of the dollar.

Re: Newbie Questions

I would look for a good one that will not have to be etested.

The 20 year rolling exemption is gone for 88 and up so those cars will always have to be tested which is BS.

Also, a 305 is a good motor and adequate for average street use. From what I've seen the majority of people can't drive well enough to justify even having a 305 so if you just want to enjoy the car a 305 is fine.

Re: Newbie Questions

George,

When did the law change on the rolling exemption?

I knew the politicians were talking, but was unaware of any decision made...
