My paint job
Hey guys
Ive been working on my car for about a year now, and its almost ready to go on the road. Its at the shop right now getting safetied and e-tested, so I have nothing better to do then write a little report on my paintjob that I did in my garage. I used 3 coats of Gm Victory Red, with 2 gallons of clear, because I knew I would be doing alot of wetsanding between runs and orange peel, being a newbie and all... I bought my paint from our local Napa with a Cmax in it. I used 2 princess auto HVLP guns, one for colour and one for clear.
First pic is the car partially disassembled with old crappy paint. I didnt get any good pictures of the car before showing all the bad Rustoleum spray touchups, but there was quite a few around the front lip of the hood, wheel wells, and around the gfx. I welded in all new metal behind the gfx for the mounting, because I was able to unscrew them from on top and the bottom and just pull out and they came off because it was so rusty on the quarters and fenders.
Second pic is of the car being sanded down and primed. The doors originally had the plastic guards along the body line, but the body line was still pretty messed up and dented in. Lots of filler along those lines.
Third pic is one side of the car done primer. I decided not to take the doors of because they are heavy as hell as you guys already know. And I didnt take off the rear bumper cover because I just got a case of the F*** its, and couldnt be bothered.

First picture is of the car all primed and mock up just to make sure I had everything primed, and I was not forgetting anything.
Next 2 are of the gfx, hood, fenders, nose, and other small parts ready for paint.
(practice fender on the ground is a paint tester, it was a piece of poo so it became my test piece for bodywork and paint)

Re: My paint job
First 2 pictures are of the car itself being painted. I had to wetsand between every colour coat with 2000 grit to get bugs and crap out of the paint. Same deal when when I sprayed the clear
3rd picture is after some assembly and wet sanding

First picture Is the car all assembled, wet sanded, and gone over with a scratch remover.
Second picture is of the car wet sanded and gone over with scratch remover too.
Third picture is a reflection of the houses across the street after using mothers scratch remover, Meguiars Ultimate Compound, then Meguiars polish.
I will take more pictures of the car once it is back from the shop. I never took any completed pictures because it as too dark out when I finished polishing, then the car went to the shop the next morning.

That looks gorgeous!
It is all in the details, isn't it? A friend of mine has a 1979 Corvette, and the otherwise decent red paint job is messed up because someone didn't bother cleaning all the crap out of the paint. Car looks awesome from 20 feet, and heartbreaking from 5.
I hope to see yours around town!

Re: My paint job
Thanks man.
Theres still some spots that need some sanding and buffing, but at this point of the year I would rather drive with a few imperfections then not drive at all. Everything will get fixed eventually.
