How to eliminate emissions

I have 85 TA LB9 (5.0 TPI) and would like to build the 5.0 in it the first thing I would like to do is get rid of the smog Junk but I don’t even know what to do because of the computer the motor has 136000 on it and I cant get it to run right I have changed the plugs and wires cap and rotor as well as the coil and fuel filter the air filter is clean and I put a new EGR on the motor runs bad with the timing set at 6* BTDC and it has poor vacuum set there. I advance the timing (mark towards the passenger side) about a inch past the timing tab to get it to run better but it still sound like a dead miss I have checked all the plug wires and they are firing good. Could the ECM be bad. I know the motor has a lot of miles so maybe rebuild is the only cure but the timing is what gets me confused. any suggestion . Also anyone think I can use my own heads and have them ported and polished and matched to my intake and have my intake polished to and matched to my runners or get Simees runners. What about a cam I want about 375 to 400 HP and keep the engine as stock looking as possible what about computer control and MSD ignition system? I know this is a lot of questions hopefully someone has already built a 5.0 and I can learn from there mistakes as to what works and what does not.

Either the balancer slipped, or you didnt disconnect the timing connector to disable the advance from the ecm. I doubt there is anything wrong with the ecm.
