Fuel pump

How can I be sure it's bad before I go through the hassle of changing it. I'm only getting 20PSI at the fuel rail. I've changed the fuel filter and checked my AFPR. What was weird was that when I pulled the AFPR off the gas would not stop coming out. The key was not even in the ignition so I know the pump wasn't running. The gas wasn't shooting out either it was more of a steady flow like when you syphon something.

Anyway, is there a way that I can be sure that the pump is bad? I can hear it run when I first turn the key and it primes the system so I know it runs. Could it be running but just not at full pressure?

Did you take off the gas cap when you played witht he AFPR? the fuel system is under pressure until you take the gas cap of, then it relieves it a bit.

One way of telling if the car is healthy is by basically priming the engine, if it primes smoothly, it should be fine, but if it primes loud and un even then it may be going bad.

Thats how I found out the pump was going out when I had my V6, but I can be wrong.

I didn't even think of taking the gas cap off. I bet that is why gas kept flowing out. good call on that one.

as for sound. When I turn the key and it primes.... it sounds fine. exactly like it did when it was running corectly.

Is there any other way to check the output of the pump?
or is there somewhere else that could be messing up the FP?

They may be clogged wich is bad for you pump as well.

filters I thought there was just the one under the car by the rear axle. I replaced that one first. That was about 4-5 days ago. seemed to get me a few more pounds of fuel pressure but still way to low. maxed out at 23PSI.

Check the voltage to the FP. If you have a bad ground or corroded wire somewhere the pump could be running slow. The filter in the tank could be bad also.

Sweet... I hadn't thought of that. I'll do that tomorrow

Thanks
