Help with stubborn thermostat?

Ok guys, I have an '87 LB9 Z28 and I wanted to switch out the thermostat because 1) no telling how old it is and 2) i want a lower temp one. I was going to have at it, and I thought this would be done in no time, but the thermostat is in a weird position. There's just no way I can really get at it to take it off. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking I'd have to do... it's not big/complicated is it? I posted in TPI because the way I see it the TPI intake is in the way....
