Setting Idle I don't understand tech article
Ok I read the tech article on setting idle speed but I don't quite understand it. The ecm controls the idle? I have adjusted the idle on the car by just turning the torx screw clockwise. It goes initially(good) but when I put it in drive it goes down, then when I turn it on again later it drops a couple hundred rpm. The tech article said something about taking out a connector with a paper clip??? I don't know what its talking about or where that connector is. I think my dad might have knocked it out permanetly. Would skipping the step of taking out and puting the connector back in cause my idle to adjust itself. I'm trying to idle my car at about 900 rpm. I have a new motor that doesn't like the low stock idle. If anyone has pictures to point out the iac connector that would be great. Also what is the ALDL the tech article talks about?
The ecm controlls the idle, if the RPMS are too low it will open the IAC (idle air control) valve and let more air in. The paperclip goes in the ALDL which will be right above your right knee if you're sitting in your driver seat, insert the clip and turn the ignition on but dont start the car, this will fully close the IAC so you can set your minimum idle air (least amount of air to keep the car running). You can't (or shouldn't) try to set your car to the RPM you want, the RPM is a hard coded number in the ECM that it trys to keep the engine running at per given coolant temperature.
I see. So once I put the paper clip in, I turn the ignition then let it sit for 30 seconds, then turn the car on. Then try to set the idle on the trottle body? If not, is there anyway to set the idle at all? If I use the regular 600 idle, my oil pressure is way low, almost to the red. I'll try that tommorrow though. Thanks.
