I couldn't find out if the 165 ECM uses ign. timing to smooth out the idle?
mine jumps all over the place at idle and at part throttle, except when I unhook the est connector.
Is this normal?
Thanks in advance, Jeff.

Yes, it is normal. Unplugging the cable is like plugging the vacuum hose on older vehicles. The timing control is removed from the ECM. When plugged in the ECM is controlling the timing based on engine temp, rpm and many other factors.
