TPIS modified MAF problem

in the TPIS insider hints book it, it tells you how to modify your mass airflow sensor by cutting out the 7 metal fins and filing them smooth
they claim it leans out the upper end of the rpm range which is to our advantage and obviously flows alittle more air
so i did it and bolted it back on the car....the temperature in jersey has been in the 30's and the car will never idle well when cold and even warm the car wants to stall, also the car is very hesitant when cold and when your cruising on the highway and get on the gas the car breaks up and hesitates
the car has a decent amount of mod's with a stock chip so i figured this would really help but it hasnt

350 .030 over 10to1 compression
world products sportsman2 iron heads
SLP roller cam 502/510 224/230 at .050
1.6 harland sharp roller rockers
52mm throttlebody
adjustable pressure regulator 54psi
hooker shorty;s to a 3 inch catback
5 speed

Car: GTA -89
Engine: Blown 415"
Transmission: 4L80E
Axle/Gears: Strange 12-bolt
Try to reset the ECM if you are lucky it would "help"...........

and do a search here on gutting/porting MAF and you will find a lot of reading, especially from "Vader".

If you've done a lot of mods and still have the stock chip, you're going to need a custom one to make the car run well.

You are adding more air to the engine than the computer thinks it is getting. This can really mess you up before the O2 sensor heats up enough to put it into closed loop (“never idle when cold”) or when you first “tip in” the throttle (“hesitation”). Your 54psi fuel pressure indicates to me you needed more fuel than the stock chip and the stock injectors are delivering and shouldn’t have done this mod. I’m guessing this was a 305 5-speed car and your running the 305 injectors?

If you’re running 305 (18#) injectors, you might be able to get away with going to the 350 (22#) injectors, running the 305 chip with a lower fuel pressure. However, if you need to buy injectors anyway,,, I’d lean towards going with the 24# SVO injectors and having at the least a “305 chip” burned (It may be best to buy the equipment) with a 24# and 26# injector constant and play with the fuel pressure and initial timing to see which works for you.

Quick fix? Go through the steps for setting your minimum idle speed. A heated O2 sensor will get you in closed loop sooner decreasing “cold idle time”. Bumping the TPS setting (staying within chip parameters) could help a little with the hesitation.

the car was originally a 305 with an automatic...i swapped in the 355 and the 5 speed cus the automatic was totally shot and its nice to drive it with the stick in there...
anyway i was driving the car today and when i start it the idle jumps around from about to stall then up to 1800rpm's for the 1st minute or so, but u gotta give it gas to keep it running
all in all the car runs like ****....but it still pulls hard through the powerband except it has the bad hesitation and sometimes it breaks up, although the check engine light never comes on ...im gonna have to put my extra MAF sensor on the car because the car ran pretty good with the stock chip...had good idle and good throttle response
im in central n.j old bridge/newbrunswick area.....exit120 off the parkway
